I think you get an 80% refund on the tag if you turn it in by August, unless theyve changed it. If you dont apply for the general tag every 2 or 3 years you lose your preference points. If i remember right they have an option on the app to refund the general tag if you dont draw the limited tag.

From my limited research, preference points get you the general tag and bonus points are for LE areas. I believe you can still buy a preference point until the 30th. I've never hunted Montana so I cant give you an honest opinion about the hunting.

And it took 4 points to guarantee a general tag this year so 5 would be a good bet next year.

I’m in the same boat as you, looking to burn 5 points next year. Looking to either go general or spend the money for the special one time and go for one of the LE units I’ve been looking at. The medicine bow are general units so there will be company but good numbers of elk and decent success...

Go out west and have a good time...and hopefully get a nice mule deer.

What do you consider a trophy hunt? It looks like lots of top point holders decided to cash in this year. Ill have 5 points come July so hopefully ill be able to get into a good hunt in a few years.

Looking over the draw results shows people burning way more points than necessary in low point areas and lots of max points holders jumping ship. I hope it keeps up to be honest so maybe point creep may slow/retract a little in a few years. I go on one out of state hunt per year and have...

That’s true too. On Facebook I’ve seen multiple residents post screen shots of their draw results with multiple elk and deer tags. One guy had 7 successful draws, so it seems there is lots of opportunity…

No not at all. I get wanting 90/10, I really do. If I was a resident I’d probably want that myself. Just don’t get all the hate for NR. We’re just playing the game Wyoming set up. Have at it. Like I said, I’m not a resident so don’t have any say in what wyoming does. It’s no secret people are moving to wyoming at a good pace, so when 90/10 passes and the residents still bitch and moan who will you blame then? Or will it be a push for 95/5?

That about sums it up. I don’t see the odds getting that much greater for residents when they get that extra 1-7%, especially with the way people are flocking to the state. I’m not a resident so my input really doesn’t matter to them, but I think they’re still going to have the same shitty draw...
