Sad story, but your wife shot a beautiful bull. I have a similar story that haunted me for years. I've been told that if you hunt long enough it's going to happen but that didn't make me feel any better either. Keep your chin up and thank you for being so ethical.

Sure hard to beat a 300 wby ballistics but like everyone else here has already said inside of 400 yards almost any of the modern calibers will do the job. Personally I like 30 calibers but I know a lot of folks that really like the 270 wsm.

Last weekend during Michigan's youth hunt my daughter was able to take this buck. We had a full moon and as we were walking out to the blind we chased out a big buck so I thought we going to have a slow day. 30 minutes or so later I see this guy coming from about 250 yards. I pointed it out...

Sad day! Trapping as a youth kept me out of a lot of trouble. It really bothers me that a whole generation of youth will not get the opportunity to learn to trap. Nothing I have done has given me a better appreciation for the outdoors than trapping. We need to stick together as outdoorsmen...

I have always been a big fan of the Weatherby magnums, I have several including the 270 wby mag. Both the 7mm and 270 wby mags are great rounds but I have been curious about the Winchester short mags. The 270 wsm comes pretty close to the 270 wby balistics.
