    Scouting 2019

Fun past couple days out in the hills - well when is when it was not raining lol! Between the rain and fog I was able to find a cool typical and another wide buck that was a loooong way off. Not a bad sunset either.

    Scouting 2019

Well anyone getting out? What are you seeing this year? Are numbers where you are up, down, or sideways? High or low big or small it is fun to see them all! I have been out about 12 days so far total - all over - got a night in my own bed last night and then off again here in a few til...

    altitude pills

I am 6’3”tall weighing in at 202 lbs today. I played hoops in college at around 210 but was much stronger. 45 years old. By the end of archery I will be down below 195 hopefully above 190. Hard to keep weight on when hunting. Good to eat as much as I want tho! My fitness is pretty good as...

    Colorado Left Over Tag List

I think my buddy ended up w that high rifle tag. He is stoked. It was a on line sale.... Always crazy and easier to get one that is returned after this first day. Wife got lucky on a mediocre bull tag so we are happy. I was at a machine #1 in line w wife #2 and the system seized up then came...

    altitude pills

Something to think about but once anyone chooses to enter the big mountains you are on their time not yours. Things like weather and acclimation to elevation are not of your control and the mountain honestly could care less about your best laid plans... Pay attention and listen to both your...

    Best hunting boots????

Early season I use either lowa Tibet’s or Salmon gortex running shoes w low gators. I only use the Tibet’s of it is super rainy, a swamp, or if I have a huge pack.. Or I pry spend 85% of my time in salmons no matter the terrain. Late season or on the snow it is the Tibet’s or kenetrek pac boots.

How Do You Define A Successful Scouting Trip?

Know the "good" spots I want/need to go but gotten to the point I just cant get to them all now. I still make it a point to make one trip somewhere in a unit I have never been. Took that trip over the past 3 days and saw like 13 deer total w one maybe 150" type buck - but hey thats...

What Makes A Big Mule Deer?????

Some reason a real big typical gets my attention more than a higher scoring non typical. Big frames at long distance also are fun to see as you kinda know the next trip should find a good one. Been fortunate but it takes a 30"+ -, 195"+ - type typical buck or 210+ non typical buck...

2020-2026 Season Structure - Final Recs

Gray I read it once - so no need to re read it as I also talked with 2 commissioners yesterday.... I agree the wording is kinda confusing unless you have been part of the process. The reason it reads that way is it is the final draft that has to be voted on in Telluride on this July 18 - 19...

2020-2026 Season Structure - Final Recs

These are the recommendations they still have to be voted on. I dont see anything to be happy about especially if you like older age class deer... Hunting bucks almost into December most years with long range (1000yd) rifles is a recipe for disaster for Colorado deer. The past couple of...

    2019 License Quota's

Are at the link. While these have not been voted on - the commission has never gone against the recommended quota's. Interesting but IMO more politics than reality.. https://cpw.state.co.us/Documents/Commission/2019/May/2019-BigGame-License-Recommendation-Summary.pdf

    Gunnison Basin Winter

The winter kill in the Gunnison Basin will in the words of the CPW be "extreme" again. The 60's will fair better than the 50's but it is not good. I took a drive Sunday and saw over 50 dead deer then lost the stomach and gave up literally too many for the coyotes to eat. I saw 1 live fawn but...

Caus We Could All Use Some Velvet..

Got a bit of time and put together a fuzzy video of some the bucks from this past year. Or on another snowy day - looking forward to lazy days in August spent on the mountain hiking basins fishing and looking for bucks. Kinda takes a bit to put them together but I also post a some of them that...

High Country Muleys 19 Who's In?

Always fun to see who is planning on gettin up high in 2019 to hunt mule deer. It does not matter bow, muzzy, or rifle who thinks they will be in higher elevations come late summer chasing some velvet?

Stage 3 declared public land closed!!

The USFS around here closed the entire San Juan national forest... So no hunting and fishing or use of public lands... I was told by folks in the know that the stage 3 ban (s) will likely start to move north and east. Think Swatch range, Sangres, Gunnison range, and Collegiate peaks will be...

    Co Draw Odds...

After the change interesting the huge increase in apps this year for sheep/goat. When moose comes out I would expect even a bigger increase.. I would expect deer and elk to go up as well. Or point creep for NR has changed to a point race.. Stats from CPW about sheep/goat are below. Desert...
