7 years worth of points.....paid off!

Congrats, awesome goat! I’m sitting on 7 points and probably not going antelope hunting until 2023. I hope to see one like that when I burn them! I only get away for one hunt a year and have Wy elk and AK blacktail on Kodiak planned first.

What Is Your Go To Hunting Knife?

My Bob Dozier Pro Guide has become my favorite. I also carry a Benchmade Altitude if I might cape something. I almost always euro mount animals for the shop now though, house walls are full.

    Shakeup in The Firearms World

I hope the quality control on Marlin goes up under Ruger. I have a couple lever guns I really like the look of, but didn't want to purchase with all the rumors I read of "Remlins". My old Marlins are good guns. That 1894SBL in 44 magnum or the 1895SBL in 45-70 look like perfect options to...

    Win M70

I’ve had issues with the CDS when shooting and dialing a lot. I’m still a Leupold fan but will stick to reticles like the B&C or VH in them. Their warranty is amazing, they took care of the ones that had erector problems. I sold them for Huskemaws on the few rifles I dial elevation on. I still...

    Where you hunting this year?

Headed to Alaska after caribou in September. I was afraid the hunt wouldn’t happen with Covid restrictions, but as of now it looks like we can comply with the state regs and go. Past that its just whitetail anc coyote around home.

    Favorite mule deer bullet?

264 win mag at first with140gr Accubonds and now 140gr Berger VLD bullets. I prefer the controlled expansion of the Accubond but the Bergers have never failed me. The rifle really likes them and they are forgiving in the winds that always seem to blow during my hunts.

    camp cocktails

Bulliet whiskey and Diet Coke for me when camping at a vehicle. In Alaska it's Makers Mark and whatever water I can find. I have an old plastic bottle from a cheaper whiskey I pour the good stuff into for the AK trips. It's lighter and less breakable. We don't have a drink every night, but...

    Camp Food- Post a Picture!

Last night on the river. Taters and onions in foil and steak. Also took some browned sausage, instant gravy mix, and biscuits to make breakfast this morning. First fishing/camping trip of the year so I went all out.

Shooting in the rain and wet optics

I had both the elastic see thru caps and bikini caps in Alaska on my moose hunt. Bikini were what I used after day 1. Nothing else seals it well enough for that level of wet. I like a lower power scope in rain too. The 3-12x Huskemaw I used is about all the low end magnification I’d want in...

What Pistols Do You All Carry?

I carry several at different times: Concealed carry it’s a Sig 938 most of the time, or a Ruger LCP if its really hot out. Woods carry it’s a S&W 60 Pro Series or a 386XL Hunter in 357 for lighter options. I’ve been going 10mm more often lately due to the ability to have night sights and a...

    What If?

I have an Alaska caribou hunt planned for this fall. I'm waiting to buy my tag and plane ticket until I'm a little more sure the hunt will happen. I'm still planning to go, just trying to be smart. I don't hate having the money for the hunt in cash in the gun safe right now with everything...

    Kifaru Lost Park

I have the jacket. I had the half zip and sold it for the full zip. If I had it to do over again I'd keep the half zip, it was warmer I think. They are pretty warm and very well made and durable. I think my Kuiu Superdown Pro is warmer, but it's not nearly as durable. The Kuiu packs down...

pump action 12 ga versus 45-70 lever rifle for alaskan bear defense

To the OP I'd be the odd one and go with the lever action. I shoot lever guns quite a bit and like the way they pack. A gun that packs better is more likely to be with me when it's needed, I know myself. I feel like I'd also be more likely to have the lever action in my hand instead of on a...

Social Distancing - What's Everyone Doing?

Calving cows, same as I'd be doing this time of year anyway. Hasn't changed much for me yet except the university closed so my wife is home to help. She is working from home but with flexible hours she can help some also. Hope she doesn't get to sick of me!

    Opening The Can Of Worms...Coronavirus...

Thanks for the well wishes and kind words, I wish the best for all of you also. While I'm worried about the effects this will have on my family's ranch, I also have to remember to be thankful I grew up on it and have lived there most of my life. The lessons learned and skills gained working...

Day 2 on the 2017 WY muley hunt. We got 15" overnight. We made several trips out of the tipi to move snow with a shovel and shop broom we brought along, but it all held up.

Last trip across the swamp and back to camp. The antlers are not the heaviest load, but they are the most awkward.

Each moose took 8 trips to pack out in the bone-in unit. This was the last trip out with mine. Moose are a lot of work!
