Looking for advice on boots? Elk hunting Wyoming backcountry the last week of Sept. Brand? Type? Insulated or non? This coming from a SE and MW whitetail hunter?

welcome to forum, tell us a bit about yourself. you are in for a treat, you could have temps in 80's for highs or 30's for highs. lows well below 32 in the back country in late sep. i use non ins on my archery sep hunts in backcountry, im a fan of columbia but danners are hard to beat if your not wanting to spend 400 on some kentricks. dont be afraid to put out 150 to 250 on some decent backcountry boots, if you dont you will wish you had.

I agree, don't skimp on the boots. I also do non-insulated, but be prepared for anything like Ivorytip said. I like good ankle support because the sidehills, skree slopes, downhill, etc. are hard on my ankles. Good luck, should be fun.

I purchased some Cabela's Perfeck hikers by Mendle for a Midwest hunt last fall. Non-insulated. Did the job plus some. When I'm not at work (office) I have them on. About $250 the best I remember.

I'm green at Western big game hunting. I'm from MS, 32 years old and love hunting whitetail. I've hunted all across the south and in the Midwest (Iowa, Illinois). I normally do self guided while hunting the Midwest (bow) but I will be hunting with an outfitter (gun) the last week of Sept.

as long as ya have the proper gear you are going to be hooked, ask your outfitter to send ya a list of recomended gear, im assuming he will send ya a packet with that info in it anyway. good for you, keep us posted on your hunt.

Yeah, I think you will be hooked. I think that is good timing for hearing bugles and stuff. Those mountains kind of get to you and you have to come back.

Ivorytip is right, guide will know the train you will be in. Everyone is going to give you different boots they like. When walking a lot, go non-insulated. I bought the lowa Tibets gtx's last year to hunt Alaska for caribou and was very happy. You can find them as low at $200 (retail is $380); worth every penny in my book.

Ill fitting boots can ruin a hunt fast. Try on multiple pairs and choose the one that fits the best. I have a pair of lowa rangers that I really like. Also, make sure you have a good pair of socks. I've had good luck ordering from zappos, Free return shipping so you can order several pairs and return the ones that don't fit.

and snow snakes if you get way up high. That's why I like the high ankle boots, so I don't get bitten by the dang snow snakes.

Dude, my wife has gotten used to me doing all kinds of hunting related stuff on the counter. Boots are nothing compared to butchering....

Once, I brought home an antelope, and started cutting up the quarters on Mrs. Finks brand spanking new granite countertops.

I barely survived.

I've run Meindle's for years and they have treated me well, I recently tried the Lowa GtX Hunter and Crispi HTG GTX. I'm completely and utterly disgusted with the Lowa's and their customer service. The rubber toe band peeled completely away on a 4 day scouting trip and they were brand new and they wouldn't do anything to help me solve the problem. The Crispi's are still running strong but for $500 a pair I think I'll go back to the Meindle Alaskans.
