Colorado is following wyoming's lead

I just got my application booklet and all I can say is WOW....it's going to get expensive for the non residents to gather points. However, colorado went a step further than Wyoming and decided to stick it to residents who have just been accumulating points without buying a license.

My wife doesn't fish and only applies for quality hunts, so there is often quite a few years when she doesn't draw. She prefers these hunts because they are great to take the kids on where they will see lots of animals. She could care less about trophies and she just likes the family outing.

Looks like the DOW left us with a way out this year as she can still buy a fishing license year to avoid the $140 in points fees. THE FLEECING BEGINS!!!

Thanks for posting granby. It took me a while but I finally found it on their site. It looks like non residents are going to get a double whammy this year, be charged a point fee and buy an annual license to avoid higher fees next year.

Dr...the way I understand it is you can still buy a non res fishing now to avoid the fees because a fishing license is good from Mar. 31-Mar 31 so a license purchased before Mar. 31 would be considered a 2013 license and would qualify you as having purchased an annual license for the previous year.

I haven't found it yet, I will when I have time. I am no longer chasing points, at my age I don't even buy green bananas . I did use my deer points and was successful. Now, I look in my home unit and there are other units that have trophies, both deer and elk. Units that require me to use a bow or musket to get to hunt. I don't know how much longer this can be done. To get to hunt a trophy unit with 24 other hunters is a once in a life time hunt experience for me. It was worth it.
Our OTC elk hunt was unbelievable, and even I could walk a quarter mile from the truck. My hunting partner did walk about a mile to get his elk. I did not buy a tag until left over cow 3rd in a unit I had not hunted in the last 40 years. All the elk were on private property by then so I had tag soup, still it was a very good hunting experience. I did find some very good deer and can draw that unit. All said it was a very good year without any PP.

Im going to have to look into this. if it is going to get to expensive Im going to burn my deer points in the next year or two (which I am wanting to do anyways) and stay out of CO.

We are now the proud owners of three useless 2013 annual fishing licenses ($55 each) to avoid the preference point fee.

As I see it since I only apply for deer it will only cost me 15 more per year to apply . Is this right or am I missing something?

It looks like you have to buy the $10 habitat stamp and a $40 deer point. There is also a $3 app fees. It looks to me that a point for deer only will cost a total of $53 with the habitat stamp. The fishing license is $56. Here is the link to the 14 regs.

Absolutely, of course I'm a little biased since I was born and raised here. Wyoming is another good high country mulie state but a lot of their alpine areas lie within the wilderness and you need a guide to hunt there.

If you had a hunting or fishing license the year before you do not have to pay for the point. The annual fishing license is the best to buy to avoid the point fee because at $56 it is the cheapest and its good for a full year starting on 4/1 so you could still but one rightnow and avoid the point fee for this application season. If you are only getting points for 1 species in CO paying for the point is cheaper. If you are getting points for more then one the fishing license will save you some money.
