I wanna start off by saying I hate long-range hunting, it isn't fair to the game animal. At 1000 yards, you can sit and talk and most animals wouldn't ever know you're there. Thats's not fair. What is considered long-range? I used to think 300 yards. Then I got into western hunting, and it changed to 600 yards. Then now I think about it and maybe 450-500 yards. Hmmmm. My set-up with my .300 winnie, should be able to slam animals hard at 600 yards. But I also bought this set-up to mess around with at longer ranges. I don't think I'd ever fire a shot on a game animal past 400 yards, but I'm only human and knowing I can put em' down past that, I might break down and shoot em' farther. What is everyone's thoughts on this topic?

Different strokes for different folks, not everyone has the same preferences of how a hunt should go. 3 things I've learned about Western hunting are:

Don't mention how far you shot something.
Don't mention you're hunting off a voucher
Don't mention the unit # to the masses

I dont think your asking a question as much as your expressing an opinion. Also, this is by far thee most controversial topic on hunting forums. With that said ive killed antelope and deer with a bow and been able watch their nostrils flare on impact. Ive also shot an elk at 798 yards. Both ways have their own skill. As long as someone is willing to practice and perfect their flavor of hunting and take game confidently I feel there is no debate. Some people like to fuc$ with their clothes on. I say if it feels good do it. And leave others alone to do their thing.

I don't think there's a set distance, some folks' marksmanship at 200 can be worse than someone's at 600yds and can vary past that depending on the rifle set-up.

This was brought up on another site and the census decided that if you jave to start taking into consideration wind, and bullet drop. Than its " long range"
Yeah that's a good way of looking at it. I guess it is a complex question too, since scopes vary so much. I can shoot 600 yds without much attention to wind etc. But other scopes might not have the reticle etc to do that. I kinda regret bringing this topic up now! haha

Ive witnessed many of conversations about this topic get ugly! Its like mentioning ethics. Everyone has a different point of view. Im not biased. I think a vapor trail leading into vitals is cool. But also love the rush of stalking in. MOST others aren't as open minded.

Kinda curious aboit the unit number deal. Whats your reason for stating that? Ive noticed some guys will tell all ( myself included) and some don't mention it.

I think it depends on how often you hunt it. #2 & 3 kind of go together. Want to tick off folks tell them you hunt a unit that takes them 8+ yrs to draw that you (as an outsider) could hunt every year.

Actually I believe that I am very open-minded on this subject as long as everyone else agrees with my position exactly! With that said, the only true way of establishing a true "never exceed" distance is this...

On any standard atmospheric day with calm wind, take the average of three(or more) solid throws of a preselected buffalo chip through a chronograph at precisely 12 feet from the apex of your throwing arm and square it.

Take that velocity squared and divide by 450400 and multiply times the weight of the buffalo chip. This will provide the Kinetic energy of the chip.

Next, calculate the distance that you personally can throw the chip and multiply that by 3. If any animal is beyond that distance, it's too far! Works every time! Don't forget to compensate for density altitude before hand.
