My public land draw hunt was much harder than expected. A 3 day hunt puts a lot of pressure on you. I got there early and scouted 1 and a half day.
Numbers were less than expected. The land was wide open and antelope were skidish. I knew I was in for a tough hunt. Hunted day light to dark. I was very pleased I was able to kill this buck around 11 am on the 3rd day. I took him at 550 yards. 4783720240930_120213.jpg20240930_120213.jpg

I can say that the over the counter landowner tags really is a threat to the antelope in New Mexico.
First morning I had an outfitter screw me. I was over 600 yards off the road moving in on a buck. He drove in with client and they got out of the truck and shot the buck. On State land that is not allowed.

Nice mass and prongs. Those New Mexico 3 day hunts do put pressure on you, but it looks like it ended well for you!

I had the exact thing happen to me on my last antelope hunt in unit 56 nm.

What Unit? did you see a lot of other hunters?

I apply, but starting to think, outfitted/private land is probably the way to hunt antelope in NM these days...

I looked at the draw odds yesterday. Hundreds of nr applying for one or two tags in most antelope units. Im out of the nm game. The 6% allotment doesnt make any sense in me staying in for any species. I loved hunting nm and it was my first western state to hunt but otc turkey and possibly otc bear are my only interests there now. So sad

Living in AZ. I would put in for the premium in AZ. and always at least hunt deer in New Mex. Drew 3 great Elk tags there in NM in a 6 year period once. When they changed to the 4% non outfitter for non Resident I have not put in once. Shame on Them . Every Rancher thinks there an outffitter and most can't guide worth a crap. They get 6% of non res . Crazy...............................BOB!
