What is your go to elk rifle / ammunition combo?

I thought that my 7mm Rem mag was a elk rifle until I started shooting my .340

Never shot an elk with a gun but I think my 300 WSM with my 150's should do the trick.

I can hit a pie plate at 500 yards every shot with it. Good enough for me.

When I do rifle hunt for elk my first choice would be my 270 Winchester loaded with Accubond 140g.

That .340 combined with 225 grain TTSX would be a go to round for anything in North America. I love my .340s.

I have taken a pile of elk with my 30-06 and 165 grain Hornady Interbonds. My shots have ranged from 50 yards to 477 yards and haven't had any issues through the years. I am shopping for a 300 currently as I really like a friends gun and I want to hand my 30-06 down to my son in the next couple of years.

I have a .300 Wby in a custom commercial Mauser action with a Shilen match SS barrel, Bell & Carlson composite stock, Leupold VXIII 4.5 x 14 with a ballistic turret. Shoot nothing but my reloads with a 180gr Nosler Partition bullet. MV = 3250 fps.

That's a great caliber. I had one in a Mannlicher-Schnour (sp) and killed a bunch of caribou and sitka deer with it. Sorry to say, I lost my load data for it.

Never shot an elk but placement is more important then anything. Going with what's comfortable for you to shoot in an accurate manner is the best choice.

true, as long as it has enough power to reach the vitals. you might be able to shoot that 223 well, but is it a good elk cartridge? probably not.

I use 140 gr boattails for most everything. occasionally I will shoot 150 gr cor loct from Walmart .140 gr just seems to group better for me

I’ve been a .300 Win Mag guy for a long time. I have Tikka’s, Savages, Snowy Mountain and some others. As far as ammo goes I’ve always shot Nosler Trophy Grade 180 gr.

This year I ordered the new Savage 110 28 Nosler with the Proof Research barrel. I should have it this week and really look forward to getting my Sig BDX scope mounted and hit the range. Ammo will be Hornady ELDX 162 gr. But I’m rethinking to going to a heavier grain bullet. I did buy 5 boxes of the 162 so I’ll keep that for now to get used to the rifle then decide if I want to step up the grain for elk. The Sig BDX system I can use both and might just do that as well but we shall see.
