What is a 170 class deer? Or 180 class deer? I hear people say I saw a 170 class buck. What does that mean? Does it mean it's somewhere between 170-179 7/8? Or is it 170 even? If someone asks me how big a buck I saw or killed was, if I haven't scored it. I'll say 170, or low 170's, or mid 170's or upper 170's. But I've never said he's 170 class. What does the class mean?

Usually when someone says that they saw a 170 class deer means that they saw one that would score around 150.

As for a "170" class deer he could go anywhere from 160-180 in my book. Judging a deer without a tape measure on him is rough even for the experts.

When I hear someone say 170 class I think 170-180. I also never say that I say the same. Low 170s mid or high.

To me when "class" is associated with the number it means a person is giving a ballpark estimation for what they think the deer will score. Like mentioned above, it needs to be taken with a grain of salt. I have had them go both ways but know that ground shrinkage is much more common than ground growth!

This thread is worthless without pics ... I will add a few here when I get time.

I use “class” all the time and usually find I am a bit low on my estimations. During scouting and in my notes I use it extensively so when I look back at the notes I don’t forget any.. Or my notes say “August 18th 2019 went to kiss my ass basin and saw 13 bucks. 3 - 180” class bucks 1 - 190” class buck.”

I also looked over 330+ bucks his year to find the one I got and again helps me keep my year to year notes in order.

Best “class” buck this year was a buck I hunted w my dad - 4th rifle. First time I saw the buck friends who knew we were hunting asked and I put him squarely in the 210” class.. After seeing him again and getting video - was no doubt bigger than 210”.

I would guess him in the 165-170" range. Inside spread and short G-4s are what's holding this buck back on score. Still a great looking buck.

velvet bucks are tough to judge. they always look bigger then they really are.

Fist gut reaction is "180 class" buck. After studying the pictures, I would agree with ridgetop above and say final score likely around 170".

These are the same "hunters" who shot a deer at 550+ yards. We all know shots like this are as rare as hitting the lottery here in the Appalachian country where the terrain just doesn't allow it... Gezzz.

I ONCE took a guy western hunting who claimed to have shoot multiple deer at 400+ yards. Yep, simply hold on the top of it's back and fire. This particular guy did not own a range finder either. Once I shot my antelope at only 275 yards and walked out to retrieve, he looked back at the 2-track road and said I can't believe how far this is... I said that's nothing, you've shot lot's of deer over 400 back home! He never mentioned it again!
