Here is a link to the left over list for Colorado big game that goes on sale August 6.

I looked at it and it ticked me off seeing a single tag available for unit 44 Deer muzzle loader. Looks like someone drew it and then turned it back in but for us who put in for it as a first choice have to go to our backup plan instead of being able to get it.

Looks like a tight list this year, tighter than I remember last year being. I was hoping to pick up a 4th season deer tag as an excuse to get out of the house with a friend, but there are slim pickings.

To be honest I'm super tired of dealing with the "mad rush" the morning the sale starts. The CPW Web site always crashes, it's a zoo figuring out what's going on, and it's super stressful. I may pass this year and just grab a 3rd season OTC unlimited elk tag or something. We'll see how I'm feeling next week.

The tag I applied for with 4 points is on there too. I'm honestly glad I didn't draw now that I have an AZ tag but that's crazy that they go leftover instead of being given to the next person that would have drawn. Maybe CO should draw alternates and if drawn, you are assigned an alternate number to know where you stand. Points still get used and it slows down point creep just a little. I know some guys love it because they get a tag they would have had to wait years for but like others have said, it's a mad dash that depends on internet speed and luck.

I kinda like your idea of having alternates.
It might take some work to manage it that way but it would be more fair to everyone who applied.

I agree 100% Leftover Tuesday is a bit!# that's past her prime. Time to stop the madness, although im sure a few residents that have it down to a science would disagree...

I like that idea alternates or next in line for tags turned in that required points.
Then leftovers just like they are now for limited tags not drawn out.

It would be interesting to see of the limited leftovers that are on the list now what the points to draw are. Is there some on there that take double digit points or are they all sub 3 points hunts? I can only guess that would determine if that plan would help point creep? I dont know, just thinking out loud.

I know that in years past that I have seen tags that take 10+ and even 15+ points to draw end up on the leftover tag list. And I have even raised a stink at some meetings but they just shrug their shoulders and say "that's the system that we work with"

Tags over 5 points go to the next 5 people “in line”. Problem is that you have to use your points and many people by the time they get the call, have plans elsewhere. After 5 calls, it goes on the list. Seems reasonable.

There are literally thousands of tags turned in every year, calling people for every tag doesn’t make sense either.

Valid point. Great discussion.

I see a deer unit I was researching that took 10 points for 3rd season has 5 tags on the list. I wish I was confident enough to turn in my 2nd season tag to try for one. Not going to do it though, a buddy and I drew 2nd season tags where we got them together and already have plans made.

If I understand this process that means that this tag was turned down by multiple people? I'm wondering if changing the season dates for the next several years has people turning tags in to try to draw in the future with later dates?

Turned in not turned down.
One scenario that I know first hand of ( a Colorado resident friend) He drew his 1st choice limited either sex elk archery tag and he drew his 1st choice limited either sex archery deer tag. Same GMUS on both tags. He can only hunt 7 days this year so he turned in the deer tag and got his points back.

This is kinda what I was thinking too.
I like the idea … it might never happen but I think it would be great.

Turned in a 76 archery elk tag that somebody should enjoy! Hopefully my biceps tendon repair is ready for the Utah muzzleloader season...but thank God I'm not still holding an archery tag!

That's definitely one I'll try for. Will that be posted on tomorrow's draw or I'm guessing the one later? Or do they still call people on the list ? Hope you recover quickly bud!
