Upgrade to a New Scope

I have a Leupold on my 30/06 and I'm thinking about upgrading. I want to spend around 500 dollars any suggestions?

I personally would stick with the Leupold, which one do you have on it now?

Big question is what ranges are you shooting?

I have a VX-3i 4.5-14x40 CDS on my 25-06 and love it. It is my personal opinion but I don't think that you can do much better than a Leupold for the price.

What model scope? I have a vx3 4.5x14x50 and love it on my 7mm with zero issues. My vortex has been back to the factory once already. You can still hardly turn the objective.

The 4.5x14 with CDs is about perfect in that price range. I have 2 of them. Have never changed zero no matter where I've traveled.
I don't buy anything but Leopold.
Even zeiss has failed me

Another vote for Leupold.

I have had a VX-2 3-9x40mm on my 30-06 since 2001, rock solid!

Put a VX-3 4.5-14x40mm on my 7MAG, and again, rock solid!

I keep thinking of getting a new scope, but just can't stand the the thought of taking either of these off the rifles.

I have 6 Leupolds.....from a 6x to a VXlll 6 x 18. Love all of them My favorite is the VXlll 4.4 x 14 x 40mm with a Leupold ballistic turret to match my loads. I have one on my 25-06 and another on my .300 Wby.

I have a VX-2 4-14X40 on my 300 WSM. It works well and its in the same price range.

I added a custom turret to it. Had to order it from a different company but thats ok. I doubt I'll use it much anyhow. The gun shoots pretty flat to 300 yards and I dont like shooting further than that anyhow if I can help it.

Just picked up a VX-3i 3.5-10x40 mm for $319 and they gave me a $50 gift card. Seemed like a good deal to me.

A VX-2 3-9x40 mm has helped kill a few critters... Ditto for a Vortex Viper 2-7x36 mm.

I like the VX3 much more than the vx2/vx1 etc... at least last time I checked.

bought a bushnell 4500 4-16x with the doa600 reticle that's quite nice, especially for the money! take a look at them...

No all Leupolds are created equal. VX3 and above are amazing but I have had some of their cheaper models and wasn't impressed.

It was Scheels - they have the scope for $319 but no more gift card. Might have been a cyber Monday special?


I do feel that the VX-3 is the beginning level for a good hunting scope.

Damn I was at Scheels that day. Grabbed that Nikon 4-12x40 for $109 just as a backup or incase anyone needed one. Didn't even take a look at the Leupolds. I was at the register with an armload of shotgun shells, noticed the deal in the flyer and the kid ran up and grabbed one for me.

I ran mostly Leupolds until I started dialing elevation. I have had some issues with the CDS on a VX 3 and a couple VX-6 scopes. I found a 3-12x Huskemaw for $719 and went to that on my mountain rifle. It has had zero issues so far. I really like a scope I can dial elevation on but that has a covered turret that I never have to worry about accidentally dialing. It's always set to 200yds unless I chose to remove and dial it. The covered turret on the VX-6 was one of the big reasons I tried them.

Leupold is a great company and makes a great scope. A guy on another forum that has a lot of experience with scopes and is respected says not to dial elevation unless you are buying a scope built specifically for dialing. Putting a turret on a standard scope is asking for trouble in his opinion. He says the VX-3, VX-5, VX-6, Swaro Z5, Zeiss V4, and many others don't have erector systems specifically built for dialing. If you shoot enough they will eventually cause problems.

I have the VX 3i 14X and feel comfortable shooting to 500 yards. How is the VX 5 or 6 for range? Can you pinpoint shot to 700 yds?

X5 on the VX-3I! I have a VX-II, 2 VX-3i, and a VX-5HD. The 4.5-14 is a great all around magnification choice also. Im another Leupold only guy, ya know if it aint broke.....

I'm another Leupold only one as well. If you can spend a little more the new VX5-HD Line are real nice. The 2-10x42 is out there around $699.99-$799.99 right now at a few places. I am seriously looking at these and for some more $$$ the VX6-HD are real nice too.

This is a valid statement. I use to be on the board of a local gun club for over 30 years and this situation played out in several instances on the range when i was there. If you use this feature, you want a scope built specifically for this.
