I?m curious on everyone?s thoughts and inputs are on wall tents. In your opinion what?s the best brand? I?ve been looking at 10x14 tents with a floor. Looked at army tents from a surplus store but all they had was a 16x32 and don?t need something that big for 2 guys. Also how thick of canvas does one get? Thanks in advance.

Have a 12x14 Montana Canvas internal frame wall tent. It’s been great and held up in a storm with 40-45mph sustained winds and gusts over 65mph, so said the local weather report. There are a number of top manufacturers. I’d pay as much or more attention to the quality of the canvas, it’s treatememts, over the absolute thickness. As I understand it, not all canvas of equal thickness is the same. You can get better performance out of a lighter higher quality product in some cases, my take anyway.

How easy are the 12x14 to set up? Is it doable for one guy or is two guys a must? Is a wood stove worth having in them as well or can a guy get away with a buddy heater? Thanks everyone so far for the input

I can set it up by myself but it's work. 2 of us can set mine up in under an hour but that includes putting the kitchen and sleeping areas up. My hunting partner and I set this tent up 3 or 4 times a year, every thing is color coded on the frame and once its up one works inside and one does stakes and ropes outside. I use a big buddy heater but others have had issues and go with wood.

We will set both tents up in the next couple of weeks to check everything and start going through gear yearly cleaning time.

Raspy what kind of hunting?

Aug Sept ?
Mid winter to winter?
Or late season cold winter?

That will drive what thickness and stuff you need. If the answer is Aug/Sep then IMO you don't need a full canvas. My Aug Sep tent is a Montana Canvas with Relite poly walls. Incredibly light.

I have used canvas wall tents for over 25 years. I had a montana canvas for about 15 then David tents. I highly recommend Davis tents. Not only are they awesome to work with, they did me up right.20170919_074056.jpg

Good recommendations above- One thing I'll add is to consider skipping the floor. Tents with a floor are much tougher to clean out and dry out. I like to use separate tarps for flooring. They are easier to clean/spray off, and cheap to replace if they get worn.

Davis and get a rain fly, snow slides off easier and keeps the roof clean and ember burn free.
We hunt some cold, snowy weather and we found that some canvas painters drop cloths hung along the walls inside helps with warmth. I add grommets to them then hang from the frame for double walls. The drop cloths are thinner canvas and weigh very little, really helps in COLD weather. We use tarps for floor.
Wood burning stove for us.

Eastfork that?s a great pic. Slugz, planning on using the tent from September into November. Mainly used for elk and Muley hunting. Last year we hunted sd in the beginning of November had 60mph sustained winds and temps into the 30s we had a pickup box camper which worked well problem with the camper is can?t quite get it into spots where a wall tent would work better. Last time I used a tent was out in Idaho two years ago tent we have now is a trekker it worked well out there but the weather was also in the 60s and never rained or snowed. Already been looking at Davis tents. Boy I sure have the itch for hunting season already.

Full canvas then. 10-12 oz

Easy for two, 30 minutes for the tent and floor. A real pain for one, but can be done.

Couple other random tent thoughts. Good stakes are important. Take a look at the 18" double T at the Wall Tent Shop. Made from rebar, bent over at the top, with a welded t a few inches below. Not used them, but they say the same stake can be used for the tent ropes and fly ropes and still get a tent roof and fly gap. May be other similar stakes outthere, but the idea is interesting. I currently use 6 long snow peak stakes, another 6 shorter ones, then the rest are a collection of rebar and 12-15" spikes.

I did have my stakes freeze into the ground once. A propane torch came in handy to heat the stakes up.

Been using propane for heat. Considering an "upgrade" to a good air tight stove that can handle wood, coal/charcoal. Also bringing in North Idaho Energy Logs where trees are sparse. Good luck!

Has anyone used Kodiak Canvas?

http://www.kodiakcanvas.com/

I have been looking at these for a couple years. They seem to have good reviews and are priced good.
Not that brand and a touch older, but it works great for quick hunts. I've used mine on some early November hunts and it held up fine. Had 6 inches of snow one year but the kids and I stayed warm and dry. Here is my old canvas sears ( cir 1960s)tent in antelope camp one year.

We now use it as just an extra sleeping tent if needed at a bigger camp

Mallard I have a 10X14 Kodiak and a 10x20 Montana use the 10X20 for everything but sleeping. I use the buddy heater for warmth in the Kodiak. Very easy to set up, durable, handles high winds, rain and snow. Can break it down and pack it up in 5 minutes. Both are good just depends on what you want out off it.
