New Mexico Draw Question

We are looking at putting in for New Mexico this year for a southern hunt in the fall. Draw odds look to be 5-13% depending on the unit and type of weapon. I am not able to find a way to do a group hunt. Does anyone know the trick or where it is that you get this done? I am going to call them on Tuesday to verify, just wanted to see if someone knows on here. Thanks.

The first guy to apply becomes the party leader by default, creating a "new application". All the subsequent party members click on "attach to an application" instead of "create a new application".

TopRut dot com has about the best odds, using a simulation program based on 4 years of the actual application by application databases.

WB has a good recommendation for you. A lot of publications put out misleading draw odds and if you aren't familiar with the NM draw system, it is easy to miscalculate your odds.

With NM, there is still a lot of "blind luck" involved. It may be the most important part and that may be a good thing; nobody really having an advantage.

I wish I could apply in the outfitter draw without having to submit a deposit.

You figure, a deer, sheep, antelope, elk, deposit ties up even more money, and in many cases your draw odds are still very low.

But if I do draw, I'd certainly or have to go with said outfitter...

oh well?

For 2 days.

I'd find a different outfitter. I haven't seen any that wanted a deposit prior to drawing.
I was researching NM last night and understood that you need to have a signed contract with an outfitter in order to apply in the special draw. If that's the case, I assume it would be tough to get one without a deposit?

Signed contract outlining services rendered prior to applying, yep. I pay an app fee, $25 this year, no deposit. Haven't seen a deposit required yet for a draw hunt.

Yes you have to have a signed contract to apply in the outfitter draw so you can obtain their outfitter number to legally apply, but no you don't have to provide a deposit with most outfitters. Even with the outfitter draw, the odds for a NR are so low that I think it is just a hassle for outfitters to deal with collecting deposits and then having to refund them. Usually the contract states that a deposit is required within xx days of the draw results if you are successful. A lot of the contracts only require you to agree to the minimum two days of guiding only in the contract to meet NM state law, with an option for a longer fully guided hunt if you want to upgrade. For example, go to Jim Welles website; http://www.newmexicobiggamehunting.com/hunts/public-land-hunts/. Jim is a highly respected/reputable outfitter in NM (but certainly not the only one) that I have applied with before, but have never had an opportunity to hunt with, because I haven't been able to draw a tag...

Good luck!

Yes, I have signed contracts for BHS, Ibex and Orxy to get in the outfitter pool. No deposits required by any of them.

For Elk and pronghorn I know my way around my units pretty well. Some outfitters will let you in the guide pool with their number for $750 extra is the cheapest I've seen. They are required to spend a minimum of 2 days with you to qualify as an outfitted hunt.

The only deer tag in the state I'd want is one in 1200 odds so not even applying. For opportunity hunts AZ archery otc is much better IMO.
