As the title suggests, why a type 9 and not a type 1 thanks in advance.
Well I'm primarily a bow hunter and kinda look down on having to resort to using a rifle, having said that, I do hunt with a gun. I want to have an encounter under 60 yards that's the rush. Potentially fewer people in the woods on a Type 9 hunt and my odds are usually better for a Limited Quota Type 9 that what I think. Tell me if I'm wrong

There are a few units where Type 1 license holders cannot bowhunt at all. Also, for type 1 tags in a few units, you can't bowhunt the first 2 weeks of September while the Type 9 tagholders can. The majority of units can be bowhunted with the Type 1 tag though so there really isn't much of an advantage to have Type 9 except in a few units.

This is spot on! Most of the type 9 really don't offer much advantage except the first two weeks of sept except what was said above. The only other Advantage is some of these require less bonus points but this is mainly the units around yellowstone that hav Grizz issues. The bighorn type 9 tags actually usually require more points than type 1

Less pressure even for 2 weeks during archery can be very important. The elk have not heard the bugles yet and fewer boots in the area is definitely is a good thing . The main advantage for NR is that many only have one time to come hunt and for many that is an archery hunt, the type 9 was first thought to have better draw odds for archery hunters exclusive. Not so in some areas. Outfitters also thought the extra archery tags in the draw would get them more hunters. By the last 2 weeks of Sept, the elk have heard every kind of elk call possible, they are very call shy by the end of Sept. First 2 weeks of Sept. are always better hunting in hard hit areas. Sounds like some are trying to get the odds lowered on their type 9 tags. If you plan to come archery hunt only then the type 9 tags are great if you can draw one. By the third week in Sept the number of hunters in the field will almost double in the areas with type 9 tags. Maybe not double , but certainly increase dramatically. The first 2 weeks in Sept can be a magic time if the bulls have been unharassed before then.

Agree completely with wy-tex. ^^^ By far my best archery elk hunting over the last 20 years has come during the first two weeks of September.

Look closely, those are special archery seasons, before the rifle season. You can use archery equipment in any rifle season. Some special areas open Sept 1 for the entire month some open Sept 15th. That is the restriction. Every area will allow you to use archery equipment, some only during rifle season, but not every area has a special archery season.

Hey Wy- Tex,

I see that Type 9 hunt in 11 was new in 2015 so it is not on most people's radar yet, hopefully, and takes fewer pts for a NR to draw. So there isn't much for intel on the unit. Are there ATV trails in that part of the Medicine Bow and non- motorized portions that ATV's cannot access? And are you free the first two weeks of Sept?

Good access but not too many atv trails. Mostly NF and and G&F land. Enough spots to walk in and get away from road hunters. Probably be bow hunting first 2 in Sept. somewhere.
