Preference points question

So I have two Wyoming elk pp and want to keep building towards a real good unit some day. wouldn't I be better off applying rather than buying the points when they go on sale? If I understand right, the application fee is $14 but the points cost $50 later when they go on sale. In addition, if I apply to an attractive unit I actually have the chance of drawing.

Or am I missing something?

If you draw your second choice you can keep your points, if you draw first you loose them. So if you want to keep them put a hard to draw first choice to keep points, then possibly you will draw your second.

I have super luck.
I drew a walla walla le tag here, 400 apps and 4 tags, backed it up by applying for a cow tag a cpl years later. 165 tags and 168 apps, me and two others didn't draw....

Question somewhat related. Do you gain a point if you apply for a unit in the random draw and do not get selected for your first choice? Or do you still have to buy the point after the fact?

I believe you just need to select you want a point if you don't draw..they will then deduct the $50 and the application fee from your refund...

You can't apply for a unit in the "random draw". You apply for the regular price or special price draw, your app then goes thru the preference point draw with your first choice, if not selected, you go thru the random draw, same unit and same 1st choice. If not selected you then go thru the random draw with 2nd, 3rd, choices, etc.
So, if you are drawn in either the PP draw or the random draw, with your 1st choice, you lose your points. If you draw 2nd choice or later, or buy a leftover, or a reduced price antlerless tag, you keep your points.

What is the difference between "Antlerless elk" in the random draw and the "cow/calf" tag? Does a spike require an "any elk" tag? Sorry for the ignorant questions...

Hmm interesting. I did not know that is how it works in WY. I am assuming you probably know more than I do but can anyone else back up your claim as to how the draw works?

Cow/calf are type 6 tags which are reduced in price over a type 4 antlerless which is considered a full price tag...also you can have a type 1,2,4etc.. tag and a type 6 tag in the same year.....in regards to above..if anyone knows the Wyoming draw regulations it would be WB...I wouldn't doubt a word he says,he knows more than most game and fish employees actually would I'd say from all the posts I have seen him help with

Yes type 6 cow/calf tags are additional tags, you can have up to 2 additional tags with your type 1, 2 or 4. Total of 3 elk tags in Wyoming if 2 are cow/calf reduced price tags. You have to have an any elk or bull tag to shoot a spike. Type 1 , 2 or 4 tags drawn first choice take your preference points while cow/calf tags do not use any PP. 2nd choice tags drawn do not take your PP regardless of type. We apply and get 1 cow/calf in the initial drawing then always pick up another cow /calf after the leftovers come out.

He knows what he is talking about. He has schooled many on Wyoming elk draw. ;)

I don't have any preference points. Going on sheer luck.

On a cow/calf type 6 tag, you don't use your pref. pts., so don't be afraid to apply. In the area where I hunted in 2013 and will again in 2017, the "any elk" tag in the GEN area actually means any elk EXCEPT spikes. That rule was implemented in 2013. Always read all the regs for your specific unit.

Mostly right, you can have a total of 3 elk tags, and can have up to 3 type-4's (full price tag), 6's, 7's in any combination (as long as at least 1 or more are leftovers). Only 1 tag can be valid for an antlered bull.

I can confirm...exactly how the process works. WB knows his stuff.

Your odds are better in the lottery than WB steering you wrong on the inner working of a draw.
