Unit 1 AZ and Monroe UT elk tags!

I drew a Unit 1 early archery tag in AZ this year, It was expected because I had 15 points going into the draw. I pretty much have a starting point for this hunt but still have a couple questions. How do the roads hold up during wet weather and does anyone have a recommendation for meat processing in Show Low or Springerville? I'm planning on bringing a travel trailer to camp in.

The interesting part, I planned to hunt deer in the Monroe unit during the general rifle. My friend and I drew the deer tags and planned to check out the unit. In the meantime he drew an AZ strip tag, with 4 points, so I was on my own to check it out. Yesterday someone from Utah's Div of Wildlife calls and offers me the late rifle bull hunt on the Monroe, somebody gave it up and I was next in line. Does anyone have any info on this hunt? I was hoping to stay in a motel in Richfield for this hunt. I don't really want to bring my trailer from California if I don't have to especially during a late hunt like this. I don't mind driving a 1/2-1 hour each way if I have to. Any info would be greatly appreciated, like what to expect, feasibility of staying in town, processors, atv's, etc.

Thank you,
Tom

Roads in Unit 1 are no problem. Can get a little Muddy in monsoon storms but no problem generally. Take rain gear. It might rain every day and it might not rain at all. Hit and miss. Couple a butchers in Show low Pinetop. Maybee some one from there can chime in who to use. You can drive in town and ask anyone too. Good Luck. My favorite Unit and some big Bulls..............BOB!

Richfield is a long ways away if you are driving it every morning, and if you do drive it odd are you will be going up out of the Koosharen area which has a lot and I mean a lot of private.

Hunting the area I would go up around Bean Hill that is on the western edge of the mountain. There is a wheeler road that will take you to the top and I have see some great elk up there. Other than that there is Langdon Mountain that holds a lot of elk.

But if you have never been there and have not had the opportunity to scout it and learn the area I would let the tag go, that is unless you only have a few points and then it might be worth it.

How many points did you have?

JimP-unfortunately I don't usually get a chance to scout before my hunts but I usually have a good time. It looks like there is some lodging farther south in Marysvale or I could drag my trailer there, that will save me some time driving. Thanks for the info about where to hunt, I will definitely check those areas. By the way I had 7 points, so not a lot.

With 7 points I would take the tag.

Let me know what you decide and I'll see if I can give you some help. I hunted deer down there for a few years and saw some great elk, I even saw the Spider Bull 3 years before he was shot and he was a good bull that year. I have also been down there on a couple of elk hunts, but nothing during the late hunts.

You are kind of stuck between a rock and a hard spot. All the good access roads are on the east side of the mountain and one on the south side that is closest to Marysvale.

If you decide to pull your trailer I can give you a great spot to park it that is only about a mile off of pavement, a nice large flatter spot at the base of the mountain. Then a road to access the top goes right up from there. There are also elk that hang out just north of this location. The last time that I was down there in October we saw quite a few and a few bulls.

My brother in AZ has used White Mountain Meat Packing in Show Low for proccessing his past 3 elk with great results.
