Looking for any real world feedback on theses units. Gathering up last little bit of gear before heading back out after some Colorado back country elk.

I've got the Delorme InReach SE and it worked great for me last Oct in WY. Never had a single issue with losing satellite contact or messages not getting sent or received. Battery life is great also.

bought a inreach last year for hunting in wyoming for 14 days and it was an awesome too. Lots of very cool features and also when u get back home you can look at all your tracks you were at. The texting worked great to my wife and a couple friends. When you send a text message that person can click on the link they receive with the text and google earth comes up and can see right where you are at. Great tool.

I have the SPOT GEN 3 and could not be any happier. Their older units are the ones that had a few troubles but the new units you can buy today are spot on! Also they are 50% off with a mail in rebate right now. I am so happy with mine and fell you will be too. But for any reason you don't like it I will buy it from you! ;)

Very happy with my Delorme inReach. Works great. Preset messages are fantastic. Link to Smart phone via app and text or use dictation for messages. It gives my wife a little extra peace of mind when I'm hiking, camping, or hunting. We all know that's important!

In addition to Preset messages (max of 3) you can add numerous Quick Text messages. I have 10 Quick Text message (each up to 160 characters). I believe you can add more but I don't know what the max is.

One more vote for InReach SE. Can communicate with family members via text to keep them updated. The smartphone app makes texting easy. Loved ones can follow your breadcrumbs online. The app has a gps screen to show your tracks and text locations. Plus, there's comfort in the SOS button in case you're in the last resort situation.

I have a SPOT, and have no complaints. I would consider upgrading to the DeLorme, but do not have a smart phone, and don't plan to get one. I am in the early planning stages of a 1,750 mile canoe trip in Canada, and wonder if it would replace the need to rent a sat phone?

Take it for whats its worth and if it would apply to to your canoe trip......I'm in the oilfields of North Africa and Middle East.....for the longest time we had SAT Phones for emergencies. Thuraya was the brand we had to use there. Had a lot of issue with having to stand in the correct spot and not move to get a signal and good comms. We started using the InReach and it has worked perfect for all drills and actual emergencies we had to use it. It uses the Iridium SAT network, which I believe is the only true 100% worldwide coverage system with high end accuracy. I like the presets and the ability to send a geotagged message that anyone can open up and view. Instant lat long and a message. In some situations I've used it to carry on a 6-10 sentence conversation with someone.

IMO its better and provides more situational awareness instantly than a Satphone due to its mapping/display functions.
