Hey everyone, I'm a midwestern guy going on my first backcountry elk hunt in SW Montana in mid thru late Sept 12-15 days. I have lots of Kuiu gear, but I want to make sure I'm prepared, without over packing my pack.

Regardless of quality brand mountain hunting gear, what items would u bring and what extra clothing items to hunt and be prepared for a variety of weather for a long trip without hauling wasted weight? Please give your list if possible. Thanks a bunch guys!

Pack layers, your kuiu clothing should be fine. I hunt central Montana the first three weeks of rifle never had much worries.

Are you back packing in or staying by the road side? That will make a lot of difference.

On my first successful bow hunt for a elk I wore Levi's and a flannel shirt so don't over complicate it. It sounds like you have the camo covered. If it is a back pack hunt I would just take two sets of clothes, one that you are wearing and another set to change into when the first set gets wet and is drying. Also for lounging around camp a pair of sweats and sweatshirt is nice along with a pair of light tennis shoes.

Don't over think it either and take to much stuff. I promise you that it all adds up. Also don't let wool baselayers hang up around camp. I did a couple years ago and when I went to put them on it looked like swiss cheese. Damn Moths

4 day hunt?

1 pair of pants total
1 extra pair of socks
1 set of base layers
Yes soft shell jkt in addition to the base layer, puffy layer, and vest.
Mid layer top optional in my opinion

Also, gloves and beanie

I have ditched the midweight fleece and replaced it with a Sitka Jetstream Light Jacket. The jacket actually packs smaller, and provides protection from the wind.

I have a sitka kelvin light vest for early season. I have a Arcterex 800 fill jacket for late season. I don't ever bring both.
one pair of pants
2 pairs of socks
one change of briefs
no extra base layers

summary for my early season:
- merino briefs 2x
- merino bottoms
- merino top
- lightweight pants
- kelvin lt vest
- Jetstream LT jacket
- OR Foray rain pants
- Columbia rain jacket or C4E torrent rain jacket
- gaiters

Not to be a kill joy but if this is your first back pack elk hunt, is anyone going with you or on your own? Even a small elk is 5 to 6 times as big as an average whitetail. I am not trying to insult you in any way. Just be realistic as to how far you can pack out an elk by yourself. If you are talking Bull's that can easily be 6 backpack loads of boned out Elk, cape and antlers. Round trip 3 miles x 6 trips, quickly turns to 36 miles. 2 guys becomes 18. Plus your camp. Plus all the miles that you may cover just hunting. Probably with much more mountainous terrain than you may be used to. Lots of good info from these guys on here. Good luck and God bless

Yes 2-3 of us total. We thought about bringing a 4 wheeler, just not how much we could use it or where we'd be allowed to use it? But basically sounds like 1 elk down could eat up 1-2 days of the hunt if only 2 of us [emoji52]

One pair of base layers, wear your pants and shirt in on you, rain gear, lightweight puffy jacket, Extra pair of socks. That's it. If you have kuiu clothing that's all u need. No need for extra pants, fleece jackets, etc. You can wear the attack pants and 145 weight merino shirt for 10 days or so and be fine! And u can use puffy jacket as a pillow
