be aware that a good portion of the east side is all wilderness,,,off limits to a non-res unless he has a guide..{ b s law in my opinion}as a d I y er that law Wyoming has just sucks.

Not sure if you know, but the deadline to apply for elk in WY as a nonresident was the end of January.
Yes, but the largest populations of elk are in the wilderness.

Also, I know eastmans is a huge source of information. But don't always go by that either. Its a great place to start. But the info they have for area 1 being almost all private is completely backwards. Its almost all public land. Just honest mistakes that everyone makes. I think they do a great job with the huge amount of info they give on every state. So be sure to do your own research also.

if the weather is warm,the majority of the elk will be high up in the wilderness areas,,out of reach for a lot of us d I y ers non-res.

From my understanding it does not have to be a guide, just a resident... not sure if that is true or not. Might help if it is.

The resident must chat with the G&F to get a "temporary guide" license in order for the non-resident to hunt wilderness. I think it is free of charge...

I believe the law states that any resident who purchases a big game license can apply for and recieve a resident guide license for up to 2 hunters per hunting calendar year. I believe it's free but not sure. So no, you do not have to hire a guide as long as you can find a resident that does this.
unit 98 boulder tag
bird hunter, that sounds bad,i have a number 1 tag, can io bow hunt with a crossbow during bow season and then switch to rifle when it opens? should I wait till the end of the season hopping elk move down out of the wilderness?i read there are no grizzes in the unit,cant see the reason non res no hunt, how about the name of a good outfitter in 98, hate to waste the points, I'm not getting any younger,is it worth bring a quad to travel rough trails, or maybe get elk out if I'm so lucky?any advice would be helpful, thanks

Yes, you can hunt both seasons in Wyoming. I have hunted 98 for 30 years. There are area's where you can find elk without being in the wilderness, but it will not be easy. If its easy access, there will not be any elk, just a good rule of thumb. If your willing to hike into some areas (hike in several miles) then you could find some elk. The elk do not come down out of the wilderness until the snow pushes them, which is usually late October/early November.
There ARE grizzly bears in 98. Not many but there are a few.... The only outfitter for the entire area is Wolf Lake Outfitter and they are pretty good. They hunt right where I do and they do well. You will only need an atv if you will be traveling up ONE road because that is all there is up into the mountains into area 98. If it were me, and I had the money, I would get a hold of the outfitter. If you don't have the money, I would be going to church a lot and praying for some luck, you will need a lot of it. 98 is a good area, if you have access to wilderness or know the area like the back of your hand. It's an awful area for a DYI guy if you don't know the area.
