I am posting this hoping to get some opinions on my research as I am to the point of wanting to use my points while I can still enjoy the mountains and the hunt. I have been researching Units 551 an 30. I am familiar with the terrian in 551 having hunted in that area in past years. 30 just by looking at goggle earth. In 2015 it was an 80% chance of drawing 551 and 87.5 in unit 30 with 8 points in 3rd season.

With the season dates being a little different im not sure 8 points will get me in either unit this year. I really like the idea of the low deer hunter numbers 5.5 an 7.9 per square mile plus I realize I have to compete with the elk hunters and both units had around 525 hunters last year 3rd season.

Im not crazy about 2nd season and losing 4-6 points but If I have to I may not have a choice plus I figure thers little weather activity or any re rutting to get much deer movement.

One important point I want to make is I see so many guys post wanting information on a unit to be able to shot a 200 inch deer. Me, I am looking for that opportunity at a nice representitive buck and to enjoy the overall hunt.

Sorry, its a little long and also I live in Ohio so so my scouting is with goggle earth and talking to the wardens. Any thoughts or opinions would be greatly appreciated. I have also posted this on a couple other sites. Thanks so Much.

I think you should go with 551 since you have hunted the unit before. It can be pretty tough to figure out a new area unless you can scout it a lot beforehand. Even a second season tag may be good this year as the dates are later than usual. If you were able to find bucks in 551 when you hunted it previously that met your expectations, then that's what I'd put in for.

Just something to consider, 2016 will be the latest season dates in years. The 3rd season dates in 2016 will be nearly as late as the 4th season dates were in 2015. People who have been buying points will be coming out of the woodwork (I will be one of those). If I were in your shoes, I would look for a unit where you have a point or two of padding.
