Diy black bear, where?

I'm from central ohio and would really like to spot and stalk black bear. I'm trying to keep this on a college budget so I plan on camping the whole trip. What area would you recommend with a high bear population and keeping the drive to a minimum?

From where you sit, your closest choices are CO, WY and western MT. Check the harvest statistics on the web sites for the Game and Fish Depts. for those states to get an idea of bear population for each unit.

Do some research on your own first, participate in the forum so you have some posts under your belt and you'll find some more help.

What about the Tarheel state? Used to have some big bears on the east side near the coast. Is that still an option? Saw a show on it one time. I know it's not out west and it was more tree stand hunting if I remember correctly but there were some big bears that came from there. Probably all private though.

When I decided to do a spot and stalk here In Wyoming, i tagged out on a 7'3" chocolate bear during the spring season. Tracking is very possible as well. I'd go high enough to where's there's still plenty of snow but the south slopes are snow free or mostly free. Idaho, Colorado and Wyoming should be equally good but I think Idaho has many more bears per square mile. You might be able to find bear surveys on their websites. Not sure how other states do it but Wyoming has female quotas and if you look in the regs, the units with the highest quotas should have the most bears

NC (Tarheel State) has some whopper bears. I'm here now bear hunting. Three so far over 500 lbs (518, 575, 535) this week. However, DIY is pretty limited. There's ton of swamps and fields, but it's mostly private.
