Yeah I've seen them caught on t.v. and it looks like they put up a good hard fight. Never fished for those boogers but I have eaten them. What I had was very good.
Yes SP, they are very fun to fish for. I have got to the point where I am not interested in the real big ones. Happy to have the young, strong or the uninitiated give it a go. Love to eat them, but our seasons are catch and release almost 24/7/365 now. That said, some oversized sturgeon, will make you cry uncle. 9 1/2 ' 225+ lbs ish in a heavy current, trust me just to watch and maneuver my boat... It is a bucket list type of catch for most, at least the real big ones are.Tim McCoy , I used to fish sturgeon is San Pablo bay, those were the days, one day of fishing with two buddies with in an hour and a half three in the boat and heading to the dock. A party boat came up close to us after we had our 2nd and was pissed, it. Got even better when we landed our third fish.
They were all caught on the surface with black ants! Everything is a little slow getting started with the weird weather we have had. So some of the typical bug life is not super active yet. I know what you mean with the callibaetis, it can be an absolute blast when they are keyed into them! Headed out this morning on the river! Hopefully I will have some more pics! I just hope the river is fish able with all the run off!Elktrout you sure had a good day of fishing. Were those all caught with streamers or drys and nymphs? Use to fish the "Gulpers" on Hebgen Lake with callibaetis and a hares ear. Now that is some cool, fun fishing. It's sight fishing and they are just taking dry's off the top one right after another usually in a straight line. You try and lead them and compete with the naturals. Have to be stealthy and quiet. It can be frustrating but when you hook up your in for a blast of a fight. Lake fishing for trout can definitely be a lot of fun.
If you happen to come through Colorado let me know! Maybe we can get out and wet a fly!Wow black ants on the lake this time of year. Never seen or heard of that before, but black ants are deadly when it does happen. Had a day on the Beaverhead with black ants that was insane! Love to see that hatch if you will. Congrats on some nice fish. Hope the river is starting to get in shape. I am contemplating like hell on heading that way in a couple weeks. Can't hardly stand it right now. Montana is calling my name!
Yea that sounds like a plan. If I do end up coming that way I will definitely give you a shout. Never fished the gold metal waters of Colorado. There are a few I've wanted to fish but just never have. Looks like you've got the local waters dialed in. I will keep in touch. If you happen to come through Colorado let me know!
