I apologize if this has been answered here before but I would like to know if you can accrue bonus points for bull elk and cow elk separately if you are a non resident? Or is it one or the other?

I actually saw a pretty nice bull in the rubies last year. He was running with a little raghorn. He was too far away to tell exactly what he was but still pretty cool to see.

thank you gr8. I know you went on a cow elk hunt last year, do you have any advice that you would be willing to share about your hunt or just the cow elk hunts in general.

Thanks again.

It might be different for residents, but as a NR you can't apply for both antlerless and antlered elk. You have to choose one or the other...

uh oh. maybe i need to call ndow.
Upon further review, I stand corrected - I think...

Elk Application Eligibility
An eligible person MAY APPLY ONCE for ONE type of hunt category of antlered elk in a draw application period; OR

An eligible person MAY APPLY ONCE for ONE type of hunt category of spike elk in a draw application period; AND

An eligible person MAY APPLY ONCE for each type of hunt category of antlerless elk, antlerless elk management and antlerless elk depredation in a draw application period.

Except as otherwise provide in regulation a person MAY OBTAIN one antlered elk tag OR one spike elk tag AND one antlerless elk tag during a hunting season.

Applying for elk
Applicants can apply for both antlered and antlerless elk in the same draw period. This is for elk only. All other species will remain one application per species in the draw. Additionally, if a person is interested they can apply for multiple antlerless elk hunts in the same draw but only draw one antlerless elk tag.

Good luck!

Depends on the area. In my area there were 3 cow elk seasons plus 2 bull seasons and all the deer seasons. By the time my season rolled around in January the elk were nowhere near any roads. A lot of guys just are not willing to work so hard for a cow elk. Consequently there were only 36 cows taken out of 173 tags.

If you use your glass properly, you should be able to cover a lot of country without hiking too far..once you find a ridge or canyon that holds a few elk, strap on your pack and go get em. This method has worked for me in Nevada and Idaho. Netted me an opening day cow and an 8x7 bull. Those were my first elk hunts ever, %100 DIY. I had to get a couple miles up off the roads to make the kill, but we saw elk every day using this method without wearing out shoe leather.

Sounds good to me, I love to go on backpacking trips but I have never done one by myself and especially going in december or january where the cold can be an issue makes me more nervous. I'm much more comfortable finding a nice base camp and doing day hikes from there everyday. Thanks again for the info Gr8 and calbuck.

I got my cow two days before thanksgiving in a herd of close to 200 and there were tons of spikes

We spooked them the night before and we both missed as we actually drove up on them. Found them the next day about 5 miles away but 400 yards was as close as one could get with that many eyes. We spotted them and I hiked in maybe half a mile from the truck.
