Non residents can apply for both and accrue points for both antlered and antlerless. Did it last year

So a buddy of mine wants to come with me to nevada for a cow elk hunt he hasn't hunted much in the last 20 years and he has 7 kids and not much disposable income. So now I am feeling the pressure to pick a good hunt and good area. I dont necessarily mind eating tag soup but I would feel pretty bad for him if he didnt tag out.

Our choices right now I think are 061, 071 early and 062, 064, 066-068 mid. If anyone can give me any insight in these choices we would greatly appreciate it. Are these good times to go to these units or am I totally off track? Our plan would be to day hike from a base camp or from town, whatever he is more comfortable doing.

Thanks in advance

I had 061-071 archery last year. Friend had 062+ rifle in November. I saw lots of animals, like calbuck said glass your tail off. My buddy didn't see a critter on his hunt but is a road hunter. We had a base camp and took the atv's in and then hiked into good looking areas and glassed. My hunt only had 17 or 18 tags filled out of roughly 100. A lot of people won't put the work in for cow elk, I enjoy it.

I hunted mid season last year and the elk were HIGH!! To the top. I used the utv also and then hiked up from end of the road. I never saw another hunter with a cow. Keep in mind early rifle deer hunters will be out and they also get depredation cow tags...it was a zoo last year

Pretty decent drawing odds for non res in area 6. The thing I like about the late season cow elk tag is that even if you shoot one a couple of miles off the road it's cold enough you can skin and quarter it and come back to finish packing out the next day.

Gr8bawana,

Why do you think the success rates are so low for these cow hunts? I can understand the NR success rates being low, but it seems like even the residents struggle with these cow hunts which I wouldn't think would be the case...

I thinks it's beacuse a lot of guys are not willing to work too hard for a cow elk. I saw some posts here last fall from guys who just came right out and said they were not going to pack out a cow elk very far.

I am not like that at all. Im a meat hunter first horn horn hunter second. A buddy ofmine always says you cant eat the antlers.

Btw gr8 i had thought about the cold being an ally, it would definitely be nice to not have to worry about the heat.

During my hunt last year, we had NO problem finding elk..within an hour of having camp set up, my dad and I took a ride in the UTV and glassed up several groups of elk. I watched the same groups for 3 days waiting for season to open. The deer hunters with depredation tags would drive right by us on their quads and never see the animals. Opening morning I was able to hike up to where they were and shot my cow at 9 am with a 135 yard shot. We didn't get her back to camp til 5 that evening.

I suspected that was maybe part of it but wasn't sure. I guess most guys just want to kill them a few hundred yards off the road then. I was hoping it wasn't due to a lack of animals due to all the cow tags NV is giving out now. Thanks for the response...
