Preference Points

Is there a way too see how many people have the same number of preference points as you? If you look at the Draw Odds table for 2015 NR elk Draw for the Unit I try for it will show how many guys had 8 points, which all the tags went to this group. the next row down shows everyone with 7 or less. I have 7 PP's and with the current numbers it will take 3 more years to go through the guys in the pool in front of me then I would have to start chancing it with all the guys in my pool so maybe 3-10 years from now I would draw a tag in that unit?

Not sure I want to wait that long, might be time to look for a different unit.

Preference Points going into the 2015 draw on the WY website is the only way to know for sure...people go in and out of different areas and the points required (those in front of you) change each year.

I get what you are trying to look at but it is almost impossible to predict time to draw from one seasons preference point totals. Reason being is people dont always put in (buy points) or they change units, or a magazine can pimp or downgrade a unit and swing the draw odds by hundreds if not thousands of applicants each year.....if that makes any sense to you at all.

I understand what you guys are saying, but the unit I apply for is rarely mentioned in magazine's it is not an area people think of when they here elk hunting in Wyoming and the applicant numbers have been pretty even the last few years.

I don't know any other areas of Wyoming nor do I have any Wyoming contacts to get me going in another area. So I would be turning into one of those guys that applies in an area based on magazine articles.

I called the Game & Fish office in Cheyenne a couple years ago and asked them that same question. They told me they had no way of looking up that kind of information. I don't know that I believed that answer but that's all that I was able to get out of them. It would sure be beneficial to know the breakdown of points. I know that the NR elk tags can fluctuate some but for moose and sheep tags we've been lucky and correctly predicted 7 out of 7 times the year when we (friends and family) would draw. I wish the WG&F would release the points breakdown so folks who are behind in the points could make better informed decisions as to whether or not they should keep applying for a particular unit. I think the State wants to keep us in the dark so we keep applying. There's a ton of application money sent in each year by would be hopeful hunters who unknowingly have almost no chance of ever drawing a tag.

The Wyoming Game and Fish lists on their website exactly how many people have each class of points. For example their were 2,615 people in the draw with 9 points, 2,616 with 8 points, 3,162 with 7 points, and 3,776 with 6 points. The game and fish have no way to know what people will do with these points next year but you can get a decent idea what you are up against.

Maybe they should develop a web app like the odds board at the race track with odds updating by the minute based on how many application for the tag...

Then charge $50 for access to the page?

I know about those points stats but what myself and I believe Rosco are interested in is the breakdown of points for a particular area. The numbers that are posted on the website are kind of generic and of marginal use when analyzing the draw odds for a specific area. The IT guys at game and fish obviously have the actual breakdowns for each area. If one were able to look at several years of data for a given area it would give you a really good profile of what to expect in future years.

I think I understand what you are looking for- my apologies. You want to know for a specific area how many points each of the unsuccessful applicants had because it only publishes number of points for any successful point class. That would be nice information to have for sure... It still wouldn't account for trend changes but it would still give you an idea how many people were banking on an area. There would still be a ton of wildcards as a lot of guys don't apply until they are "ready to hunt". I bought points for 8 years without applying at all in the area I wanted. I think there are quite a few people that do this.

On their web site I see the draw by PP all the way back to 2006. The demand index under draw odds, pick your year, then select your species under the preference point heading.

No apologies necessary. I have a NR brother and two NR friends with max points who have not entered the draw yet so they aren't reflected in the draw odds either. My brother's son only has 5 points and would like to hunt in the next year or two so it would help us if we knew where he stood in line for a particular area.

Although it really sounds like the lesser of two evils, I think I would probably recommend the lubricated option...
