Newbie here, I'm looking for info (advice) on what state and unit to either apply or buy tags. I've been swimming through the sea of info on the internet and I'm probably more confused now then when I started looking.
I don't have a problem paying a trespass fee for private property.

your can get left over tag every year around gillette and south of there, mostly private but will let you hunt for a tresspass fee. contact the wyoming game and fish and they will email u the list of land owners who let access on there land.

Retterath is right, they get some pretty good ones around here sometimes, too. Just to add to that, I have heard people on this forum say that the game and fish landowner list is out of date and the chamber of commerce has a better list. That might be something to look into. I haven't though.

Well, looks like you have a start. Wish I could help you out more, I just know that we sure saw a ton of them on our way out to elk hunt. If I were going, I'd certainly check on those lists and go from there. Can be overwhelming with all of the info out there. A lot of folks on here were willing to share some advice with me which I really appreciated.

well, I think I've narrowed my search put in for units 77 or 114 or wait a couple of years and put in for units61,64,or60.
Ya I know I changed my mind on paying a trespass fee and went for the units with more public ground.
I've got 9 points for Utah elk so I should be getting somewhat close down there, I Hope

You are joking aren't you?! In this years draw the max PPs anyone could have was 8. Every unit, but 77, that you mentioned took over 7 PPs and 60 & 61 took all 8. Unit 77 even took 6 PPs to draw a tag for sure, so you're not even in the ballpark after your search. The only way you could draw any of those would be to get very, very lucky in the random draw. If you don't understand how to read the odds tables please ask and we'll help.

The 114 type 2 tag had zero applicants in the special drawing this year so it could have been drawn with zero points by paying extra or it was 100% draw with 1 preference point. You are restricted to hunting within 1/2 mile of irrigated land so you would have to do your homework to find if any public land exists fitting this description. This tag does not have an * next to it indicating difficult access so the Wyoming Game and Fish believes there are public opportunities here with this tag.

There are some BLM areas by the gas fields between Worland and Ten Sleep that are pretty accessible from the highway. I think the were along the Nowood road, but someone had better check me. I should go look at a map before I run off at the mouth, lol. Those aren't anywhere near irrigated land for the most part. Around Burlington, Manderson, Worland and Ten Sleep all have quite a bit of irrigated land, so there might be some pretty good places. I would probably lean towards Manderson, Hyattville, its pretty antelopy country it seems like. Last time I was there you could almost hunt at night from the flares everywhere. Its pretty close to Topgun's deer hunting area if I remember right, so he might be a good reference for that area. I sure am glad I am a resident, it looked like there were only one or two tags for a few of the areas mentioned for non-residents.

You're talking along the Bluebank Road (BLM 1411) that divides 114 and 115. It's all BLM on both sides, but either unit takes a number of PPs for a buck tag with 114 taking almost max PPs unless you go with that tag requiring that you be within 1/2 mile of irrigated land. That hunt is really more like a turkey shoot than a hunt IMHO. Doe tags can be had in both units like anywhere else in Wyoming because PPs aren't used and all are in a random draw.

Hilltop made a typo and is referring to 114. See my previous post on that unit.

ya I've been called crazy a lot and stupid even more. never said I HAD to draw tags right away did I ? Like I said I changed my mind. eventually one of us will draw (someday) even if only one of us draws a tag we all go makes for cooks ,spotters and packers. until then we'll keep hunting like we do. I put myself and my kids in many states every year. I couldn't find a good unit that we can all hunt so I figure put in for the good stuff and wait. I never liked running all over hunting so so places coming home with so so animals or nothing at all. Yep I lean to the trophy hunt just the way I do it.

Did you ever think that you came on this website unknown to anyone here, asked a random question without even naming a state, didn't say if you had any PPs anywhere, etc. and now come back with that opening statement. You may not be crazy or stupid, but by not telling us anything more than that like whether you were talking about hunting in 2015 or maybe not until 2035 it didn't help your case. We also tried to help as best we could with what little information you did offer. Now knowing that you're talking trophy hunting, be prepared to wait 10 years or more in most states to get a crack at one unless you get real lucky in a random draw like Wyoming has after their point draws.
