I have been hunting Region H for mulies for awhile now and was thinking about trying out units 78 or 79 near the Medicine Bow Area. I prefer packing up into the country and get away for all of the four wheelers and the pressure. Anyone have any opinions or thoughts on these units for deer hunting. Not loking spots to hunt just opinions and thoughts on these units.

Thanks,
Tony

There are some places to get away from people. 79 has some above timberline hunting. The best place to get away from people in 78 is in the wilderness which non-residents can only hunt with outfitter or resident guide. I think the deer hunting is getting better since they made it limited quota. The nicest deer I have seen was in 78 in the north Platte wilderness.

I grew up in Laramie and am in these areas frequently. These areas are still recovering from low population issues currently. There are some decent bucks but deer density is way below where it was in the past. I personally believe these areas need another 3 years before they will be good again. Most of the deer are in heavily forested areas where glassing up bucks is difficult to impossible so a hunter will have to get lucky to find a good buck. Between the two areas, I believe 79 is currently the better choice but still not great. I helped a few hunters this year and they were able to harvest 2-1/2 year old bucks and never saw anything big. I personally would hunt elsewhere for a few years...

Thanks for the info. I was just wondering what people were thinking about these units. I have heard that the deer population was coming back is not what it once was in those areas. It is not like I don't like hunting in Region H I was just thinking of maybe changing it up a little bit since I have yet to fill a tag in Region H. Don't get me wrong I could have shot many little bucks from forks to small 4X4's in that 140 range, but I have not seen anything 160 or bigger. I like to let the little guys go and hopefully get bigger and older.

78 and 79 are easy to draw right now for a reason... I realize this looks attractive to hunters with zero to few points but there is a reason it's easy to draw- the deer numbers just aren't there. I do think this will improve each year but its hard to say how fast the recovery will be. If your looking for a change of scenery maybe consider W? I have heard it is decent right now but I don't have first hand knowledge. Maybe someone else can help with that.

I would be interested in wondering what area in W would be the better option. Thanks for your information I appeciate it.
