I'm a nonres. of Wyoming with 4 elk pref. pts. I was wondering if anyone would know my odds of drawing a type 9 tag in unit 38 for 2015. I have hunted unit 40 in the past and it only took 2 pts. to draw. I was also wondering what the deer hunting is like in 38.

You obviously know how to get on the G&F site to buy PPs, so all you need to do is go to the Draw Odds Section to find what you want to know. Units 37 and 41 A/O will probably draw with your 4 PPs next year. The other BigHorn Units will take at least 7 PPs next year for a 100% draw on that A/O tag. That's the stats for the Regular PP Draw. You can look up the higher priced Special Draw odds yourself in case you want to up your chances to draw, but you'll have to spend over $1000 just for the tag alone. There are deer thorughout all the BigHorns units, but it's not easy hunting them.

Kelly,

Keep in mind that the web site only gives previous years odds. They have no way to know how many people will apply or even how many tags will be issued the following year. Some areas see a steady increase in applicants causing a "point creep" or an increase in the number of points it will take to draw. Occasionally an area will see a drop in applicants as well but usually only if the population was affected negatively for one reason or another. Basically you won't know your odds of drawing but you can get an idea what they might be like if you view past years drawings. Good luck

Unit 38 took 6 PPs for a type 9 tag in 2014. Giving a 64% chance. 100% with 7PPs. That's the standard PP draw. I don't have the special draw odds in front of me, but they should be around 4-6 PPs. Good luck!

If the OP wants to hunt elk in the BigHorns in 2015, I would advise him to put in for the Type 9 A/0 tag for unit 41 that he can probably draw with his 4PPs in the Regular Draw or definitely in the Special Draw. There are plenty of elk throughout all the units up there and some real good bulls if you have the time to get on them. I'm heading out to unit 45 in 10 days to help another site member on his A/0 hunt after his buddies backed out on him!

Yup, a 300+ bull is possible with archery tackle all over the Bighorns, just have to have the time to do it right.
