Anybody purchase one of the new Zeiss Gavia spotters? In in the market to purchase a new spotter and my budget will be somewhere around $2,000. I've really liked the Conquest Binoculars and think the spotting scope will be a good complement. Any other recommendations or thoughts on the Gavia?

Not looked through one, but the reviews I've seen suggest it is right there with a Vortex Razor HD 27-60x85. So it's a vg scope.

Take it for what it's worth...just my opinion.....I get to travel through Europe regularly so I'm always stopping and looking at high end glass and comparing. I used to be of the mindset that nothing will ever even come close to European glass from Swaro, Zeiss or Leica.

Now.......I think the only thing they have going for them is the "edge clarity" and "low light transmission"......arguably for us hunting types.....I care the most about the low light stuff. Ive attached a link below to a web page I watch when new scopes come out. Its a bird forum.......go ahead and laugh :) that has some PHD level smart people on it....they take pics of stars and birds and stuff. One of their reviews is below

Optical quality is great and I saw not much difference from the other big players.
Colour tone is close to neutral, maybe a bit into blueish.
Very disappointingly shallow depth of field. Just a millimeter turn on the focus ring and subject was out of focus.
Build quality and weight is excellent.
Focus ring is extremely smooth and easy to manage.
Sharpness was outstanding to me.
No considerable light loss at zooming in.
No sharpness loss at zooming in or out.
Touch and handling is very nice.

No all that being said.....when I side by side compare european glass to some of the new higher end Vortex stuff.......its very very close IMO.

Got a funny story that's un related to my question but earlier this winter we had a ton of strangers park In front of my house glassing and holding big cameras. So one day when they showed up I went and asked them what they were doing and there was a rare bird of some kind living in my trees! My first response was don't you guys have anything better to do than to creep in my yard looking for birds, they didn't like that too much

Thank you Slugz for the info! I really appreciate it

Jordan, there was a similar bird story a few years back here in OR where hundreds of birders converged. The landowners set up some sort of rotation for viewing. I watched a TV show where it was featured. I guess they work on their life list of birds about like some hunters do for a few inches of antler. But they know optics better than hunters in my experience.

You might consider Kowa spotting scopes too, if they are in your price range, birders seem to love them and they have a very extensive line applicable to hunting.

The Gavia is not a made by Zeiss in Germany scope.

Its is Zeiss's mid price scope made in Japan and is the same scope as the new Vortex Razor HD,Maven and defunct Brunton Icon.

The top Zeiss spotter is still the Diascope series.

From the early reviews I am seeing on this scope I would steer you towards the Meopta HD in this price range.

Which one are you saving for? Been thinking about one too, but not sure which one, probably either their 66 or 77 mm line.
Probably the 88 since it's my truck scope.

I just bought the kowa genesis binoculars since they have the same glass. Like them a lot so far and I thought they put the SLCs to shame. Eyecups are a little weird as I had to twist them in a little or else you almost pinch your nose to get one sight picture.

What SLC's? The current SLC is easily better than the now slightly aging Kowa Genesis.
