Hi, I'm new to Colorado and new to hunting elk. I have a 16 year old that's in this with me and he has an extended hunt coming up in units 7, 8, 19, 191 for Cow. Our original tags were in 191 and we saw lots of Mule deer, but no elk but it was very warm. Does anyone know where a good place to look might be? We were originally planning Cherokee SWA but we only saw mulies there when we went a few weeks ago for 2nd season.

Those lower elevations will start to hold more elk if we get any kind of snow. Depends on the winter this year. If it's mild again cow herds will be more spread out. How long does the kid have?

I'll do some studying and make a few phone calls. The bull and cow we dropped during 4th rifle were both above 10,500 with 10" or less of snow on the ground.

Snow will move them down, look up by the Wyoming state line but stay in Colorado, wardens are patrolling in Wyoming to catch the cross over hunters. Snow this week will move them around.

If I had to get a kid a cow.....191/19 border and around Stevens Gulch STL and West of Cherokee SWA.......WRT the border hunting other than the area around Dry Creek and near the 8/191 line.....most of the better hunting is locked up on private in 9.
Just my 2 sense and what I'm getting from from intel dudes up that way.......I have yet to see snow up to their bellys and a big migration or push occur yet. Hope that helps and good luck!

I bet Slugz has it right. Looks like some snow is on the way this week to maybe help push them down some. The mountains up here have been finally getting some past couple of days and N Colorado is in the same boat I believe.
