What is you favorite set up?

Not looking for the mass mfg guns but more Custom or Semi Custom rifles that you guys have built yourself or the small gun shops have built?

Please add caliber, approximate cost less scope, brand of components used, and who built it.

Thanks!

This is my Custom 338 Ultra mag

Mauser action, match grade fluted barrel, bell and carleson stock, made by Tac-Ord in ID.

Now I'm not gun smith at all! I bought this gun from a friend and just put the scope on and did the range work. Came up with my own load recipe that worked great. I've been told that the action could be a Winchester, maybe you guys will know and can clue me in. Also I've heard recently that Mach Grade warranty will be lost if their barrels are fluted due to the heat that is made by the grinding process and they say it can ruin their barrels accuracy.

I started this thread because I'm in the need or I guess more like the want for something lighter then this one. This gun is going to a local gun shop for consignment this weekend so will be looking to replace it once it's sold.

Thanks for the input I know I will get from this thread.

My bet.. MM and CC will be the first to comment! Thanks guys!

IKIC, that looks like a pre 64 model 70 winchester action to me, which I would argue is one of the best and safest actions ever made!
It could also be a newer model 70 action from after they went back to the bear claw extractor/CRF style in the 90's I believe. You can tell that by the safety, the pre 64 has a 2 position safety and the later has a 3 position safety. Other wise they are nearly identical although there are some slight differences inside them.

Not what your looking for but I am building an AR in 204 Ruger. still waiting for parts on backorder so its no where near done yet but Im using an Aero Precision upper and lower, The rest will be all DMPS other then a CMC trigger and complete Rock River stock I got a great deal on on ebay!

IKIC, looking at your pictures, it looks like there may be a SN on the front, right portion of the action and a manufacture stamp as the one pictured below. If so, it's a Winchester action and you'd be able to look up the SN for manufacture datepix112017242.jpg

So the action is Winchester. Thanks for the help.

Anyone hear about the warranty issue with fluting the barrel?

I've heard some good things about cooper. Aren't they the rifles that Best of The West uses now?

Cooper has a great rep over in my part of the country as well. I don't think you could go wrong. I pieced my rifle together as I could afford parts when I was deployed. Then shortly after I got back I sent it to a gunsmith in TX to have it assembled. I actually shot it yesterday with some diff hand loads I'm trying out. One stood out...140 grain hornady SST. Two holes touching and one just slightly separated from the group. This rifle has been outstanding for sure. As a matter of fact, I've taken 6 whitetails with it here in Ky. All were under 40 yards hahaha....so I'm looking forward to coming out west with it to say the least.

.270 WSM

Hart Barrel -#4 contour fluted $400

Browning A-Bolt Medallion Action from a .257 Roberts $275 (good deal on an auction site)

Boyds Laminated Stock....upgrading to a McMillan someday

Ikeepitcold you should keep that winchester. I built one but only left handed & stainless. All my buddies call it "thumper" They have seen the results of that 338 RUM and comment on the "thump" sound it makes when it hits its target. kodiak bear take 2.jpg

Like this Kodiak bear @ 382 yards w/ 250gr speer grand slam bullet

If you ever make it to the great land it is a perfect round for long and short distance hunting

IKIC,

I'm another fan of Cooper rifles. I have one in 338-06 and it's a real shooter! I'm no fan of BOTW, but the accuracy those guys get is compelling.

I agree. Ever since John Burns left that show has gone down hill. I did like it for half a second when the G7 boys where there then if allowed them to long range pursuit.

I do like the. Cooper rifles
