Most of the guys i know w bad knees played sports and most of the guys i know who played sports have bad knees.

guy in the office next to me likes to run, qualified for the Boston Marathon. His hips are giving out from the running. He’s trying to figure out if he can make the run before he has his hips replaced at 53 yo.

my body hurts today, pretty good powder day yesterday. with that said, it is better to hit the grave with a beat up body, versus a pristine body.
stay safe is the worst thing to ever happen to this country. Ride fast and take chances!

I played 3 years of high school football and 3 years of college football, also 2 years of football when I was drafted in the Army.
Never got hurt bad in HS (broken nose & dislocated fingers). Screwed up a knee in college and again in the service. I am 81 now and am paying for all the years of hitting and tackling (I was a middle linebacker). I have 2 replacement shoulders, a replacement knee and also an ankle. I am scheduled to have the other knee replaced February1 of next year. Loved football, but have paid dearly as I have gotten older. I am sure that I would not have received the education I got (Graduate Engineer) without sports.. Would I do it again, probably compete in another sport, I was a pretty good baseball player too.

Lots of great advice, but he is an adult and he will do what he likes to do.....for sure.

My FIL just had a hip replaced at 88 yo. Sure your knee surgery will go without a hitch.

i second the adult and will do what he likes. Training and ppe would be a compromise to reduce the likelihood of significant injury.

An update. He rode New Years Eve in Arlington Texas. Something called the Arlington All Star Bronc Ride. He made the rides and came home with the championship buckle. I asked how many contestants there were and he said around 40. He also said the guys he is training with made him train on some kind of device for 30 days before they allowed him to get on a horse. We will see but he seems to enjoy the life style.

We have quite a few college students in our ministry that rodeo. It certainly is a lifestyle and an all consuming one at that. Truth be told I don't think they are really any more beat up than I am from playing hockey, contact until I was 18 and then semi- contact all the way until I turned 30.

Oddly enough it was goofing around playing basketball that tore my ACL and heavy pack outs that seem to have done more damage now adays.

There’s no stopping it now. Sounds like he’s traveling with a good group if they’re making him practice on some sort of bucking machine first. Tell him congrats.
