Not hunting related but planning to take my family to yellowstone camping next July. What campsites should we look at? We will be tent camping, flush toilet a plus for the girls. Wanting to see animals and see beautiful country. We would be coming up the first 2 weeks of July. Any tips or help would be appreciated.

Thank you

Bears will limit your tent camping areas. If you can't stay in the park plenty of nice areas around Jackson or maybe Cody. You should see the Buffalo Bill Museum in Cody if possible.

For wildlife viewing bring binos or a spotter and check out Lamar or Hayden valley early in the morning. If your lucky you might see a grizz or wolves.

For camping I liked Madison. Nothing spectacular about the campsite other than it is centrally located.

Literally just helped a buddy do some planning on this last night. The bad part is you better hustle if you're not already too late. Even the campsites book quickly, a year in advance, and the rooms and hotels are long gone for the most part.
Hayden and Lamar Valleys are where to go for wolf and Griz sightings. Early mornings and late afternoon. You will see the wolf crowds. It will look like a spotting scope hatch all huddled together. There is a website to I believe that helps you get an idea where the wolves generally are spotted and what times of the day. Good Luck and have fun.
Go fly fish the Madison R outside of the park while there. Do a float trip with Arricks Fly Shop. It also be something you will enjoy even if you've never done it before.

I agree on what others have said, and the Northern chunk of the park is my favorite. The area from Mamoth to Tower is also really good for seeing bears, both black and grizzlies.

Odds are that if you don't have reservations for a camping spot by now you are not going to find any in the park.

Flush toilets are also going to be hard to find. The last time that I was through it they were mostly vault ones, but it has been a while.

Looking at going next year. July of 2018. Picked July because my work shuts down the first two weeks of July every year. So I'm off those weeks if I want it or not. Is there tent camping restrictions? I had heard that there is but can't find anything on it. But ya that's why I'm trying to get stuff lined up so I can go next year. Also my boy will be in forth grade so the free pass will be a plus.

I think that the best thing for you to do would be to contact the park directly

They should be able to answer all of your questions and direct you to the direction that you need to go to make it a real enjoyable trip.

We've stayed in cabins before both in the park and outside Cody. They can be really fun and not too expensive depending on how primitive you can get. Warm and dry at night with toilets. The Pahaska area is pretty cool, with history.
Bear activity determines camping restrictions for tents. You could have a campground reservation for a tent that gets changed due to bears in the area.
Sounds like you have time to plan for next July. It is a busy time in the park

Stay away from that place in July if you can, May and September are the best times.
Sorry to hear you don't have a choice on vacation time. Consider spending some time south of Yellowstone in the Tetons. Maybe starting your day really early will help you beat some of the really awful traffic. I would also recommend seeing the Buffalo Bill Museum in Cody, an hour east of the Park.

I hate tourist traps but you do have to go to the Buffalo Bill museum. The firearm section will be closed then for reconstruction but they have plenty to see.

You could always stop at Buffalo Bills grave on Lookout Mountain just above Denver. They have a nice museum with a lot of his articles there also.

All depending on how you are traveling.

Good thread! We are heading out there from Wisconsin this July, going to do the badlands, rushmore, keyhole state park, over to Yellowstone for 3 days, then up thru Montana to Glendive then thru Roosevelt Nat Park then back home. I agree with everyone over the making reservations in advance, we tried 2 wks ago and wow I couldn't believe it we ended up booking on rv parks just outside of the park because our 31' rv wouldn't fit in any of the available sites. Really looking forward to it tho!

Most campgrounds in the park have hardside restrictions. I would try to camp outside the park somewhere. There is some pretty nice campgrounds south of Cooke City just in Wyoming. Last time passing through the park with a friend around the 1st of July and we couldn't even find a parking spot at old faithful, and that damn parking lot is big. We drove around the parking lot a couple times and left and went home!
