Wyoming unit 54 type 2 elk

Hi everyone my brother and I drew wy unit 54 type 2 elk tags. Super stoked! We are from Washington state but still plan on doing a scouting trip this summer and two week long hunts one starting Oct 1st and the second trip towards the end of Oct. We both have lots of elk hunting experience but this is my first trip to Wyoming. We will be in great physical shape and plan to hunt really hard, also considering bringing horses. I've talked to the bio and have been doing lots of research online, Google Earth and on X Maps reading everything I can find. Anyway, if anyone has hunted this unit type 2 or has any info that would help and would like to share I would be very appreciative. Thanks in advance, feel free to pm me.

Saw a couple great bulls in that unit last October. Unfortunately, I had the 51 type-2 tag area that borders it to the west.
The best access to that 54 type-2 area is fro the west off the Beartooth Highway and down the Morrison Jeep trail.
If the snows come, access is almost impossible to the National Forest land. The fist week of October into the second week would be a better bet for weather ,but up there things could go south in a hurry and then three days later warm up and melt off to mud.
Look on Google Earth around Deep Lake and fan out from there.
From what everyone says, last fall was snowing unusually earlier up there. But I can tell you by the end of the first week of October last fall, it was drifted pretty deep and a pair of snow shoes would have been helpful.
You may need two weeks back to back to get it done. But, your probably alot luckier than me. And as last fall was my first hunting elk, probably more experienced too. So you may be fine.
But it's a long way in there and I wouldn't even consider less than a two week trip up there.
I never was on the east side of that unit, near the mix of BLM and private. So I can't say alot about the weather on that end. But not much access to public from there.
Hopefully this helps and I hope you punch your tag on a monster bull.
