I am in the process of planning a scouting trip to unit 38 in Wyoming this summer. Praying to draw this elk tag in 2019. I just want to get to know the unit better before I go all in and hopefully have a plan in place before applying. Looking for any information anyone is willing to share on potential areas that would be beneficial for me to look into. From what I can tell and read there are a ton of roads in this area. Would it be beneficial for me to haul an ATV out with me or would a truck be sufficient for getting around? Thanks for any information

As you can see from a map, 38 has a lot of roads and also a lot of non-roaded areas. I'd say an ATV is helpful for sure. A lot of the roads you can drive a truck on but a ATV will make traveling 10x faster. 38 is typical to any bighorns unit. The elk summer up high and can move extensively if we get a snow storm. There are elk all throughout the unit though. Remember that once the rut hits, bulls and cows move around a ton so don't plan on hunting where you find elk in August.

Bring an ATV or UTV for sure in the Bighorns. Some of the FS roads are very well maintained, but once you get further in, the roads can be very rough on a vehicle. Lots of snow can fall in a very short time. Keep a shovel in your truck at all times.
