Looking for some advice or tips on sheep hunt areas. I have 20 points and am looking at area 22 and 5. I understand that when 22 closes you can continue to hunt in 5. I am just curious if anyone has hunted 22 and how the sheep numbers were? Thanks for your help.

Why waste 20 points on an area where you might get a 140 ram if you can find one and miss the 5 opener. Much better areas with better success, bigger rams for someone with that many points.

Hi Jim, I'm Jim. I see you are from Michigan. As a nonresident you can draw either tag. I would only use 22 as a back door to hunt Unit 5 with fewer points. With that said, Unit 5 has had a bit of a slump lately, check things out before applying. I haven't heard anything from this season. I am not following the various units as closely as when I had some skin in the game.

If you are going with an outfitter, talk to SEVERAL and get their recommendations of where to apply next year. I'd start with guys like Justin Jarret and Meade Dominick. There are some other NW units that have been trending lately that would be worth getting their opinion on..

If you are hunting DIY, I would go Unit 5 because there are historically enough sheep off wilderness to get it done. Many of the other units have too much wilderness which requires an outfitter. If going DIY, you might want to give Unit 5 a couple years depending on how the unit is trending. When you are in the driver's seat with points, there is no need to burn them if you have time to watch the trend. The risk of course being that Wyoming changes their draw systems as other states have chosen to do well into the point game to make it more fair for everyone. Of course that is least fair to those who are the most invested.

Considering you can draw several tags, I would also call Kevin Hurley who works with the Wild Sheep Foundation for his advice. He's a Wyoming sheep guru.

With that said my son and I both killed rams in 5, he hunted late in the sage in sight of the road. I went early on a solo backpack hunt (with several prior sheep hunts under my belt).
