Hey guys my family and I are planning a trip out to Wyoming to hunt muleys this year and since all the tags were sold out in region y where we usually go we are planning on heading to area 40 in region m. We are looking to camp in the big horn forest in the northeast corner of the area. Does anyone have any suggestions of spots to go or tips for our hunt? I appreciate any advice.

Thanks,

Brandon

I've hunted there the last 2 years. No Muleys, only elk and road hunters. 164 is a better area. ;)

Thanks for the input but we won't be able to make it during the season for area 164. We were also looking at region t but we were thinking region m would be better. Does any one have any experience in region t? Would that possibly be a better choice?

There is a big HMA down there on military reservation land, but I have never hunted it.
Camp Guernsey in region T?

I almost bought a region T tag early on. That's where I was going to try and make my way to. I ended up finding better areas in region J around Albany peak. You have to pay a trespass fee to access the public land around Albany, but there was a bunch of public land there once you did that. The WYFG folks I've talked to say the population of MD in region T is really doing well, but it has a lot of private land to maneuver around.

By far and that's where I'll be spending the entire ten days when it opens 10/1! One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind in that moonscape over there MM, LOL!!!
Some year Im going to go hunt it just so I can say I hunted on the "moon". Then I will post pics of my 237'' nontypical moon buck I killed on it HAHAHA;)

Yeah, Guernsey. I have heard varying reports, but I am tempted to give it a shot.

I have hunted this area over 15 times, with mixed results. The last several years have been tough up there, lots of elk and cougars, but few deer. Last year we could not even get into the area due to the heavy snow. In my opinion this particlar area is very weather dependent and if you catch the migration, there are lots of deer. That being said there was a reason we stayed there for so long with mixed results, it is beautiful country, and on occasion we have seen some really nice deer up there, though the largest we have actually gotten scores a 167, typical. Other here have mentioned area 164, I have driven through it, but never hunted it, basically because I wanted a more high country type experience. It may well be a better unit for all I know.
If you decide to try this unit and camp in the National Forest my suggestion would be to take the road just East of the ski hill, High Park Road I think (?). It is plainly marked. Follow that back to the green gate, also marked as Rice's cow camp. From there walk in, the farther the walk, the better the hunting. Depending on which week you hunt, you may well have the entire area to yourselves. This is a walk in area only, no ATV's allowed.
Another option for access is to drop down into the canyon and take Smilo Road back up into the National Forest. Since the improvements several years ago you may be able to back it all the way up by truck (weather and mud dependent), that opens up a lot of territory for you, but is bordered by private property, so be careful. ATV's are allowed on this road.

I can vouch for a mountain lion by Nipple Butte last year. The were several bucks on the burn along with some goofball archery hunters also. The hard part is finding where they go in the forest to bed. If you want more info about the east side of 40 in the BNF, pm me.
