Well, I didn't draw my region K tag so my buddy and I picked up a couple of region D leftover tags and was wondering if anyone had any advice or experience with the area. We are looking at the mountains east and west of encampent and saratoga, I know there is a bunch of private around there, but looking more at the national forest ground. Obviously its not a trophy area, just looking for a fun hunt and to see some deer. Thanks for any help.

I am not sure why you say its not a trophy area. 200" deer are killed every year in there. Most people don't see them because you can't really glass them in trees, but they are there. There is a fair amount of public. If you want to go high then you can go up around the peaks in the Snowies. Up there you can do some glassing. On the Sierra Madre side you can hit up around the Spring creek lakes. If you don't mind some packing the Encampment River wilderness always holds some big muleys, but most people are not willing to go down in that big hole. Platte ridge wilderness offers some mixed sagebrush and trees around the river. May be worthy of a day or 2. The deer in this area tend to be narrower then up north, but they also tend to carry more mass. Grew up in this area, so if there is something in particular that you are looking for just ask.

Just a reminder, to hunt in the wilderness area's Wyoming Man talked about, as a non resident you are required to have a licensed guide or outfitter with you.
Wyoming man, thanks for the info. I have heard of big deer being killed there, just not as many as other areas on average thats why I mentioned "not a trophy area". I have been looking more at the high country areas to hunt, hate dealing with private land and worrying about where I am all the time thats more why I have shied away from some of the lower country. Love the looks of that country. My wife is from Wyoming so I have plenty of relatives that could accompany me in the wilderness if I decide to go that direction. We are heading out in 2 weeks to look around and get a feel for the country. Thanks for the advice.

My buddy and I also picked up Region D deer permits for this fall. We are thinking about hunting in Unit 70 around the Shirley Mountains but we've never hunted in that area. Can anyone give me some suggestions for lodging or camping? Are there any relatively close motels? What about camp sites with electric/water hookups? Thanks in advance for the help.

There is a motel in Medicine Bow that hunters use every year. There is also a campground in Medicine Bow, not sure if it has full hookups.

The snowies are some of the best looking country I have ever hunted. No deer to speak of a few does and a couple of small forks, this is elk country. I just hunted this area 10-1-11 thru 10-8-11. I saw 7 bull moose and 1 cow. a buddy I was with a bull moose walk to 19 yards of him. We had elk bugling two days without success.
