Just curious how many guys on here applied for Wyoming moose. I have talked to quite a few that decided not to apply this year since the tags went up. I threw my name in the hat for area 38... someone has to draw the random I guess. I'm hoping for a few less applicants to compete with.

I applied for, and should receive, a resident area 26 moose tag. Didn't have enough preference points for the premium units like 38...but I think area 26 will be okay.

I got behind on preference points from the get go. The year after I last drew a moose tag, they started the preference point system and I was required to wait five years before starting to accumulate points. So now I'm 5 years behind the maximum points, and my chances of ever drawing area 38 are slim to none (except for possibly the random draw).

At my age, area 26 will have to do...I'm looking forward to it!

I threw my name in the hat in for an area 38 resident tag. I'll never have enough points to guarantee a draw (only 4 points), but I won't draw in the random draw if I don't apply.

I'm still riding the pine on a waiting period...but I have a good feeling about drawing Montana.

Im like Buzz, i drew area 24 resident bull moose tag last year so im sitting out next 5 years. But i will get back in the game when i am able too. I did start building points in Colorado for moose and am just looking at a cow tag when i get the first opportunity to draw in 3 years. Good luck to you guys able to apply, meat sure is awesome.

I dropped out last year. I know there's always a chance for a random tag but it's not likely. I'm glad I did now, not so much because of the tag price increase but the mandatory PP fee of $150. Good Luck Hilltop, maybe you'll beat the odds!

Honestly ID has the best odds if somebody wants to hunt Moose in the lower 48. That's where I'll be sending my money.

I never entered the WY draw. I decided I'd rather save the money and go to Alaska than hope to someday draw a WY tag. A friend in WY lives near some of the premium units and that's where I'd want to apply, where he has local knowledge. I don't think I'd ever draw those tags while I could still hunt that terrain so I decided to go the AK route instead. I'm headed there this fall.

How did your area 24 hunt end up?

That area 26 tag should be a fun hunt, we've taken 2 bulls out of there, one archery one pistol harvest.
I consider ourselves lucky, we taken 3 bulls in Wyoming and spouse is closing in on PP for another decent tag.
I gave up on my Colorado moose PP, I'm in the don't want to pay that much boat.

I think if I were a non resident I would apply just every once in a while for a random tag unless you're close on PP. You never know how many will drop out next year or so.

I have 15 points and will be grabbing another this fall. Hopefully I'll be able to draw a mid tier hunt soon!

I'm a resident and applied for 38. I know a guy in CO last year that drew the random in 38. He had 2 points!

After drawing 20 and 26, in 07 and 14, we did not start on points again. Odds too long after the wait period.

I drew a NR 26 moose tag in ?11 and a sheep tag in ?16 so I am done for those species in WY.

I?ve been putting my son in for points since he was old enough to apply for sheep and moose and he is currently at 13 points for each. I haven?t decided if I will continue to buy him points come this July due to the price increase for preference points this year.

Good luck to all of you who have applied!

I would build those PP for your son, at least one of the species. He has a nice head start and very well can and will draw a tag in his lifetime. Maybe he can start taking over the fee when he is gainfully employed.

How did your area 24 hunt end up?
I shot a younger bull with 8 days left in the season. I passed a few bigger than the one i shot trying to find a whopper but never did see one. I seen a decent amount of bulls and cows in the area though. I tried holding off for a big one, just never seen one. Seen my bull 100 yards off the road and decided to shoot him and not waste my tag. Glad i did. I skinned, quartered, and packed whole thing by myself to the truck. Glad it wasnt any farther than that. He ended up being 5 on each paddle and 31 inches wide. The meat is awesome to say the least. As soon as i can get back in the game i will start applying again.

Congrats on your bull!

We spent a week scouting Area 24 last August and didn't see a single moose. Yeah, I know August might not be the best time to scout but it was cool that week and we put on several hundred miles driving the roads looking for moose (much of it early morning and late evening). We also stopped and talked to several locals who spend a lot of time in the area and they said they hardly ever see moose. Several came right out and told us not to waste a tag applying for area 24.

Based on that experience, I decided to apply this year for Area 26 instead.

I cant imagine spending a week in 24 and not seeing moose, assuming you look in the right places that time of year.

I think the trouble most people have, is that they don't get a chance to hunt them often enough to learn their habits. Things change all through the year with moose, and where they are at each time of the year is not intuitive.
