Wyoming elk units

Am looking at two Wyoming elk units and they are units # 59 and #61. My question is: The elk located in these units, are the a resident herd or a migratory one? If migratory would they come out of Yellowstone Park. Also, if they are migratory I would guess that it takes some rough weather to get the elk into # 59 and # 61.

Thanks in advance for the advise on these and also: Merry Christmas

Some of both depending on which hunt and when weather hits, but unless you have horses and someone to get you into the wilderness areas legally it will be tough sledding. 59 is almost entirely wilderness and 61 also has a big chunk on the west side and private to the east. The late hunt in 59 that starts on 11/1 would probably be considered the migration hunt in those two units.

A lot of elk come out of the Park and also down from Teton NP and the Park down near Jackson. It just depends on when the bad weather hits to get them on the move. For example, this year down there the elk, sheep, and Bison didn't come out of the mountains and down low into the Refuge area until late November and the first part of December. My buddy in Sheridan had no luck on his first Bison hunt the middle of November down there and when he went back last week they were all down and he shot a big bull the first morning.

61 is not for the faint of heart, if you apply and are successful I would highly recommend scouting it. Get horses lined up if you don't have them...

Have you hunted 59 or 61? Both appear to be good units
Nope, I don't go anywhere near where the big bears might eat me for lunch, LOL! The information I'm giving you is from friends I have out there or others that offer information on other websites I frequent. There is no way I would hunt those units without horses and at least one, and preferably two other hunters along.

Scott. Would 61 be a better unit for elk than 59. Also, is that a resident herd or do they migrate in once the weather gets bad? Just finished reading my EHJ and what a great magazine. Got a subscription for my son too!! Merry Christmas. Gary

Gary, i would simply echo what the MRS says. Guy has Wyoming spot on, you are really just playing the odds on both IMO.

Boy, does that bring back some memories... and yes, he was definitely in Area 61.

I'm still not sure if you're talking type 1 or 2 for 61. With the type 1 tag, you absolutely have to have horses. Don't even think about doing it on foot. During the late season (type 2) you can get it done on ATVs. But, horses would still be a huge help; especially after the shot.

61 is a great hunt if you have horses. However there are better areas in the state than 59 or 61 if you don't have horses and access to the wilderness. 16, 22 & 23 come to mind...
