Does anyone have any information on this elk unit in Wyoming or has anyone hunted this area? Is it worth the preference points ( for non- residents) it takes to draw it?

The majority of this unit is within the checkerboard land pattern and offers no public access. There is a LIMITED amount of remaining unrestricted access that gets hunted very hard. There is more public access in areas that elk migrate into during the late cow season.

I was in this area this past year and have been looking at it on the maps. Do the outfitter's control much of the private land that is checker boarded? Looks like alot of big chunks of private ranch area. From what I saw the elk seem to migrate their to get away from hunting pressure. Is that a fair assumption Southernwyo and thanks for the comments??

The majority of the checkerboard lands that hold elk during bull season are leased. The only area in the checkerboard with open public access is the WGFD Daley unit. Sometimes during the late cow season elk will migrate onto the unit.

I bumped this thread only because I'm sitting here a week before Christmas at my office computer not having had my kids out and hunted elk yet this year. Quite frankly, I've been looking over anything and everything for an excuse to drive west and I'm close to the final buzzer on the elk season. I happened to see 377 left-over Type 7 cow/calf tags in WY Unit 108 and immediately began researching. I am curious why so many tags left-over? Normally that would be for a good reason...and most likely a negative thing. Is this a good spur of the moment late season cow hunt for my 13-year-old son and me??? It's a 13-hr drive so am taking that and the $$$ involved into account. I see the season is open 12/1-1/31 and figure, if there is a decent elk population and public land to hunt them on, I might as well look into it. But I honestly don't know much about this unit and I'm a little late in the game here. I see the checkerboard of BLM and private and also looked up the Red Rim-Daley WHMA info on the WY website as someone commented on above. Google Maps is open in another dialogue box as I type. Any suggestions or warnings on this unit in regard to public access to where the elk would most likely be? I would love to make a bonsai run over there, put some miles on the truck and boots, see some new county, and just hunt! Probably a pipe dream, but if there's a chance at an elk hunt here and the possible reward of some meat for the freezer, we'd be game to give it a shot. I'd love to hear your comments.

I have hunted 108 a couple years ago with my son who had a bull tag. He did manage to kill a 5x5 but it is not worth allot of points unless you are hunting with a outfitter. They control all the land that most of bulls are on. As for cow hunt you might be alright if the weather cooperates. Allot of elk migrate to the unit from the south. The south end of the unit has some decent land to hunt but you have to watch the boundry.

This area holds huge bulls...

Here is mine from this year.

There are public land opportunities beyond what quick searches show but a person needs to put some time in researching. Out West Safaris controls a good portion of the best property in this area but there are some smaller landowners that offer trespass.

After hunting this area, I wouldn't recommend it for a late season cow hunt unless you pay for private land access. The only exception would be if there is a lot of snow to drive the elk onto the daily area. I do think during the earlier seasons a person could harvest a bull or cow on public fairly easily but the best hunting and the majority of the big bulls remain on private. If any of you need specific info, send me a PM.

Thanks for the input MEC and Hilltop! My wheels are still turning on this one. Honestly, for a cow elk, I don't think I'd want to consider public access fees being I really couldn't afford to pay for that. Some day I may, but I think right now I'm just interested in cows on public land that we can work hard for and have an opportunity at. If 108 doesn't provide that, I'd unfortunately have to pass...BUT my boy and I really want to go on a trip and go elk hunting! :) For sympathy votes...we have had no elk in our freezer for several years now. :p
HT - congrats on that gorgeous bull and what a backdrop for a hunt. What an experience that must have been. Great pics! Thanks for the offer to PM. I'll contact you tomorrow.
