Cow elk hunt options if your flexible?

No dice for me. Can't believe I couldn't draw a cow tag with 75% odds.
FYI -I don't know if you knew it but there are several areas around Pinedale that in the past have many leftover cow calf tags, areas (92,94,96,97 &98) they go on sale first come first serve basis (on web site)in summer (1st wk in aug?)i believe non residents get them at good discount. Areas 92,94&96 have good rd access. Areas 97 & 98 are hiking or horseback type areas.

There are no tags in the state that get discounted.

I haven't heard of these discounted tags either. There are "reduced price" cow/calf tags but those are part of the random draw. I know there is usually leftovers in certain units but I hadn't heard they are discounted. Resident tags are already about as cheap as they can get so I don't know how they could get any cheaper.

Sounds like it won't be first come first serve this year but a draw instead. Sounds like it is still in the works but that's what I understand is going to happen. Which sucks because there is a different tag that I would gladly buy but if it's a drawing this summer, it will probably be a lot tougher to get.

Where did you hear that the leftover tags will be by draw only?

Flyforfun,

Yes 62 type 1! I am still in shock!
This is exactly why I like the random draw included with a point based system. Arizona I think is going to this finally as well. Please keep us updated with the hunt. Congrats again!

I hadn't heard they were changing how they sold the leftover tags! I can tell you that it has only been in last few years that they actually sold out of the leftover cow calf tags and as a Resident we can buy one General or full priced Limited Quota tag and draw a cow calf full price tag. Once they go on sale as leftover we can purchase another at the reduced price (3 tags in all) Pretty easy to hold out for that once in a lifetime Bull when you have a couple grocery tickets in your pocket! Anyway I was just trying to be helpful, getting the unsuccessful news in the draw system is always a bummer and if you willing to Cow hunt there is definitely good opportunities on this side of Wy. I posted the elk tag pricing list from the G&F an adult non res saves $289.00 and a youth hunter saves $175.00. I would rather the G&F sold this tags to non residents at over 5x the money, They definitely can use it they have cut person ell by like 40% and services are going away fast hard times and the future may not be good in the Cowboy State.

I was just noticing the same thing. General tag stayed the same with 2 points required but my tag went from 3 to 4 points required.
There actually was some point creep for the NR GEN tag. Last year it was a 100% draw with<2 pts. This year it took 2 pts., and there was only a handful of tags left and a 4.36% draw chance with <2pts. I hunted with this tag in 2011 and 2013, and it has been a slow creep upward. It's easy to buy your points in WY, and if you ever want to hunt there I suggest that you belly up to the bar and get started.

Your reading it wrong.
Type 1, 4, and 9 tags are full price, doesn't matter if you buy them leftover, or draw them.
Type 6, 7 are reduced price cow/calf tags, they are that price weather you draw it or buy it leftover.

Not being a jerk or anything, but there isn't much that you have right in this post.

On the subject of leftover tags, can anyone tell me what the likelihood of drawing a leftover for area 59 might be? Are there ever any archery leftover tags?

I drew 62 with 1 pt! I am so freaking excited!
I'm glad you drew that tag instead of me. My buddy and his in laws were supposed to put in for cow tags in that unit, but they backed out on the last day to send in apps. He didn't tell me that they didn't apply until after the deadline. I would have been hunting solo if I had got drawn. Hard to find good help these days.
