Wyoming Elk Outfitter/Guide Recommendations

I am investigating a Wyoming elk hunt for 2017. I will have 4 points for that draw.
I guess I prefer rifle, but would consider any weapon, any season.
I am looking for a high country, preferably western Wyoming.

Have a high country region G deer hunt planned for 2018. Should have easily enough point for that.
However, I have never been on a high country backpack hunt. We will likely be back packing for antelope in 2016 to 'simulate' conditions, but we realize its not 1:1 for high country western Wyoming.

Thought came to mind to do a guided elk hunt in 2017, to learn the ropes, experience the conditions, do a trial run with an experienced professional, and hopefully come out with a nice trophy elk. Love that to be a 350+, but that's probably a bit unrealistic...

been looking at several outfits from afton, pinedale, jackson etc.
just wondering if anybody had some recommendations or success stories?

What about the wind river mountain range NW of Dubois? Any thoughts for that area?

thanks for your time.

Ben in Iowa.

I've gone with Non-Typical Outfitters twice now and highly recommend them. I have become friends with a couple of the guides and they want you to get an animal as much as you do. I would be hard pressed to look anywhere else, but I know there are a couple of other good outfitters in the Afton area. Good luck with the direction you go.

I have not hunted with them, and know very little about them, but Non Typical Outfitters (like Wyoming Hart mentioned) is the name I've heard come up over and over for deer. I would NOT wait until 2018 to hunt deer in Region G. Hunt it as soon as you can! If it were me, I'd go deer then elk. One bad winter and Region G could be slammed for several years. Talk to the biologist in May before you apply to make sure there has not been bad winter kill.

Elk on the other hand are far more tolerant to Wyoming winters. You are kind of in no-mans land with 4 points though. You might just want to just consider a general season hunt. I've heard good reports on Justin Jarrett on the general season hunts.

I do think there are some tags in the Bighorns (30s and 40s units) you will be able to draw with 5 or 6 points though.

I should have mentioned earlier that both of Non-Typicals hunting camps are general areas. Both camps have great elk populations in the area. A 350+ bull is probably not reality but a decent 300-320 bull is not out of the question either.

I agree with UH on the deer as well. Hunting it sooner than later is probably best. This past fall I only hunted one ridge for two days and saw a lot of nice bucks that made it through the season. Just need to make it through winter yet.

Sure appreciate the feedback. Non Typical Outfitters was on my short list too.

Deer will likely have to wait till 2018 in order to ensure we have enough points to draw.
Assume point creep doesnt get too out of control.

4 points is no mans land for elk, I agree. Is there any other units or outfits that would be a good draw with 4 points?
I was just thinking western wyoming in order to learn for the deer hunt, but if any place else like the bighorns or cody area would be a good 'simulation' i would be open to that as well.

4 pts probably is going to limit your elk options. If you have the scratch, I'd be looking at Gene Carrico out of Rawlins.

I used to guide for Triangle X Ranch north of Jackson...18 mile horseback pack-in hunt...wall tents etc...Extensive horse riding every day. We would take 350+bulls every year with the largest being over 390 while i guided there. Now, that being said, to go there and expect a 350 is not reality. It depends on the year etc. But their harvest rate is what i would say is one of the highest of the public land elk outfits in Wyoming, if not the west. Call Robert Turner and talk to him. If you are set on a big bull, the last hunt or two can be the best when the snow pushes the elk out of yellowstone, I have had days where i sat and watched bull after bull filter down the ridges in the deep snow. But you are entirely dependent on hoping the snow hits for your hunt, so it is by no means a guarantee. They are a great outfit and it is an awesome camp, I left because i changed careers, But i do miss the elk hunting there. . All in all, if you are searching for a BIG bull your best bet is north of jackson, or west of Cody outfitters in the wilderness because you dont have the points for a top unit tag. If you want a a big buck, go with non-typical, but it is well known the better bulls will come from around the park area. Justin Jarrett and Wapiti Ridge is a top notch outfit and he is a great guy as well for someone out of the cody area. im happy to answer any questions ya got as best i can. There is nothing better than a deep wilderness horseback hunt in those areas of WY

General Special draw can usually be had most years with no points, or one at worst,

Thank you mntnguide, i will check them out.

Are there any other units or outfits in WY that folks would recommend with 4 points?
Was originally focused on western high country type hunts, but not being biased, i probably should consider all my options.

I don't know what it takes for points now, but I hunted a while back with Beaver Trap Outfitters and had a good trip. I know the owner pretty well and he is a heck of a guy. To late for this year hopefully you found a good hunt. He would be worth talking to for future years in my opinion. Its rough country and physical ability will directly impact success.
