Depends on whether you're flush with cash to buy a bull tag that's left or possibly a cheaper reduced price cow/calf tag that is also still available in elk 47. Tags are left because of the lack of access to private property where most of the elk will probably be by the time hunting season rolls around in October. However, after the rut is over in early October a lot of the better bulls will leave the cows and go off on their own to rest and gain weight back for the winter, so it's possible that you could run into some that haven't stayed with the cows that will be seeking protection on private property once the shooting starts. As sure as I tell you not to get a tag and you don't, you'll come back here to MI looking to kill me when one steps out at 100 yards and all you have in your pocket is the 37-1 deer tag. The area you'll be hunting is very diverse and it holds elk all over the place, but once the rut gets going in September and then the hunting seasons get going you just never know where you'll find elk because they can travel ten miles and will do so in a very short time frame if they get disturbed much, whereas deer will be in the same general pockets and just hold up in areas where it's tough to get at them. If I were you, I'd check out the two hunter access programs for private lands (HMAs and WIHAs) in the area as soon as G&F puts up the 2014 lists on the website, as they are down for updating right now. When they go up, check to see if any allow both deer and elk hunting and if they do you can start making some calls and finalize a plan. Doing that will depend on whether they get those up on the site before the tags go on sale next month since you never know if/when they will sell out. The best scenario is that they will go up before the tags go on sale (bulls on 7/10 & cow/calf on 7/17) so you can do what I mentioned to possibly have something set up and buy the tag(s) quickly when they go on sale online those two mornings. Good luck on whatever you decide and let me know how you do upon your return!
