My buddies and I all struck out this year in the draws so looking at doing just a meat hunt. Talking about getting leftover cow tags in Wyoming. One buddy seems interested in Unit 61. What's the hunt there like? Another friend has never killed an elk so it would be cool to see him get one. Any other areas that might be good?

You may want to look at area 108. It is a later season hunt that has a bunch of tags and really high elk numbers. Public land is limited but according to the local warder in Rawlins I spoke with, The main herds "winter" on a lot of the public. For this reason they issue around 500 reduced price cow tags. It sounds like a slam dunk for a cow elk but I haven't actually done the hunt. Late season area 7 is also an option... Usually tags left and again lots of elk that wander back and forth from private to public. Good luck!

I have hunted unit 61 twice late season cows. You will be surprised by the difficulty of terrain for a cow hunt. Allot of people road hunt as there are lots of trails to ride with atv. Think about the effort to get a cow and that might change your mind. We were actually there to scout for a bull hunt down the road.

Unit 108 in Wyoming is allot of checkerboard property. It may be hard to get access to private property. Have hunted the unit so if that is what you decide to do let me know maybe I can help out.

I agree with MEC, I hunted 61 in the late season a couple of times. It's SWARMING with road hunters, at least it was then. It's no slam dunk hunt. It can be easy, but where we hunted it was a HMU on a private ranch. NO off road travel, not even for retrieval. And expect lots of competition. And a couple times it was WAY below zero with high winds. A lot of hassle for a cow. Saw a grizzly bear following an elk herd once. And most of the guys who were successful were on horseback riding the ridges. Good luck!
61 is some steep country, be prepared that you will likely see elk, but it will be some of the hardest fought meat if you go by foot. At least it will be a good story when it is all said and done!

I am not as familiar with Jackson, but by Pinedale you can set up looking over a feedgrounds. There is a good chance you can spot them coming or going. Its one of those timing deals, probably. Maybe it is the same by the Hole. Anyway, I think that is good advise tim, going over that direction.

Kentuck, the Pitchfork ranch is the ranch I was hunting. I haven't been there for years though, but there were a lot of elk one year and practically none the next. It's hit or miss. And Scott is correct, that is some STEEP country over that-a-way. Like I said, lots of road hunters. Getting around there on foot will be pretty tough. You'll sleep good though, after all that climbing!
Had our hunt. Frustrating hunt because there were tons of elk. Just couldn't get to them or they were on the wrong properties. I have never seen so many elk. Weather was crazy. -24 opening day and a foot an a half of snow. Learned a big lesson about Wyoming, if it looks like a mile away it is probably two or more.

That sounds like the same lesson I learned on my fist trip out to Wyo. My buddies and I are looking to do our first cow elk hunt next year. What advise do you have for a guy looking for a DIY cow elk hunt.
