You definitely need to be able to go when they are on the refuge. Bulls tags are much easier to fill most of the season. I talked with both outfitters on the Refuge and either would be good to go with. Their hunts consist of putting you on a horse and riding you right up to the herd for a shot. The days the bison were not on the refuge the outfitters would ride the hunters around for a bit then sit and wait for them to come over. The issue I had was with one 20 year old guide who thought he was doing a guy a favor but ended up not so good for him. The outfitter he works for is good. You can do it on your own as we did. Conditions can be tough, cold and deep snow. But it is very rewarding when you get it done on your own. Getting the animal retrieved for you helps a great bit.

Thanks for the story and photos. Seems like this type of hunt is about keeping up with the conditions and location of the Bison. When the time is right you need to be ready. I bet hunting in those conditions will test a person. Looks like you were well prepared for the hunt. When you take an animal of that size you better have a good plan how to retrieve it. congrads!

it is not to often you have a little hottie, gutting your animal. Ralph and Camille do a great job.

Well, not sure Camille would find that comment respectful. I would also not hesitate to recommend Eli Hale at Western Skies Outfitters. He was on the refuge every day and had horses available for day hunt at a reasonable fee. He also does retrieval. Great guy and willing to help out hunters he did not have booked.

My bad, shouldn't have assumed you meant that comment any way except respectfully. She works hard very hard and has my respect.

Informed today no charges for anyone. I think I will get my brass back at least.
Aged the back quarters 14 days in our garage and the meat is great. Burger turned out awesome too, came out about 90% lean with 10% grass fed bison fat. Moyle is tanning the hide.

I did talk to Ralph and think I can make it work with the timing. Decided to put in for a cow tag, now I just need a little luck with the draw :)

You need to make sure you have time to go when they show up on the refuge. I would plan on a late December hunt and a Jan. hunt.

Plan is to book a week of skiing in Jackson hole and hopefully hunt if they are moving in the right area. According to Ralph that should be a good plan. Back-up would be to go back in Jan at short notice. Some risk, but worth a try.

Sounds like a good plan. Hope you like skiing the steeps. Jackson is beautiful during winter. Decent hotel prices for the ones with a hunter rate.
