Wyoming Area 23 elk

I would't waste max points on 23. You can do much better with those points. With max you could draw 24 which would be MUCH better.

Yea I think I would avoid 23 also. I had seriously considered applying there and then after some research, found out that most of the elk head to private land rather quickly once rifle season starts. Wish I had some links or something to direct you to but I don't. I just remember one guy saying he hunted cow's there this year and didn't see much at all. If you have maps of the unit and look at it on Google Earth, you'll see that there isn't a whole lot of good looking country for elk. Better decide quick though with the application deadline fast approaching!!!
I asked another guy that said he hunted 23 about his hunt and got this reply:
"I can't believe that the state of WY manages 23 as a trophy area and I called them and told them so. 4 of us saw a total of 9 elk in 6 days of hunting. The weather really sucked which was a problem. The outfitter claimed that we were hunting on the best spot for elk in 23. That could have been true but the rancher was letting a lot of other people hunt on a tresspass fee and the elk got pushed onto another ranch that we couldn't hunt. I definitely wasted 5 points on a bad hunt situation. We actually hunted on part of the Rattlesnake Ridge Hunter Management Area. The outfitter never mentioned it before hand. Elk seasoned opened on 10/1 and the state HMA opened to the public on 10/09 but the rancher was letting plenty of people onto the ranch opening day so after a couple of days the elk were gone. "

Yes, in the month of September. If you draw the 23 tag, you can bowhunt in September and then rifle hunt for 2 weeks I think in October.
