I spent 5 days last week hunting this unit. I stayed in the Shirley mountains and hunted in that area. Did not get a shot off, my hunting partner did yet did not harvest one. We were in elk every day, but most was on private land. There were quite a few hunters, more than what I imagined. I did some more research today for when we go back next month to try and fill our tags. Is anyone familiar with these HMA in that unit? Hanna or Muddy? This adds alot of acreage that we can hunt. I am going to spend time on google earth and onx maps to figure out the areas to go in. This would be in the Medicine Bow Breaks. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I was there as well. You should have applied for the Hanna HMA. I had the Sept date but it was too wet to get back in where I wanted to go and i wasn't going to walk 5+ miles in. The draw is now closed for that HMA however. The Muddy and Shirley HMA's have little acreage in 16. I am planning on going back in Nov or Dec.

I have the hanna hma as of today for the month of November. I plan on going the 6-9th. Put over 40 miles walking last week so getting into a good spot hiking won't be an issue. 3 of us will be going so packing out divided up. I heard the beer hma is great but a special draw earlier in the year.

Cold and possibly snow. Drive safe. The elk do move onto the HMAs with weather. Maddox Meats does a decent job in Medicine Bow.
Avoid I-80 in the snowy weather, take 287 out of Laramie.

I was able to get it done this past week. I had a great time, my hunting partner on the other hand did not. His truck broke down on 2nd day with the cv going out which took out the 4 wheel drive. He ended up having to get it towed to Casper, spend a day there getting it to a shop and then a rental to come back that night. While he was gone I stayed and used my utv to get around. Fortunately I was able to find a large herd of elk on blm down off the mountain. The snow had pushed the herds off the mountains for the most part. It was a very cold and windy week. The wall tent held up nice which saved us from having to drive and use a hotel. The bulls bugled more this past week then they did when we were there in October.
