Hey guys, I'm new to the world of forums. To give you a little background I've hunted mulies, blacktail and elk the last 16 years in California and Colorado. I'm looking to do a public land speedgoat hunt in Wyoming 2017 with my father. I've been doing as much research as I possibly can via forums, members research annual, BLM offices, onX hunt maps, etc. to find a Wyoming unit that offers public land (with access) and a high draw success rate. We're not looking to shoot monsters- just a management public land buck pronghorn. I'm seeing unit 16 seems to have a good draw success rate and has BLM although I'm seeing it seems to be a little difficult to make access. We aren't afraid of doing some hiking... in fact that is what I want. Can anyone out there comment on accessibilty to public land... even if it means parking our rig on the side of the road and hiking a few miles out where we can stake out some tents. Another question; we are trying to figure out logistics of harvesting buck and getting that meat cold ASAP. One thought was if we were able to make road access to BLM we could park and set up camp next to the truck with a Yeti. Bone the buck out and leave it in the Yeti with some dry ice... other option we were thinking was as soon as we harvest run the meat into the nearest town (Buffalo?) and pay to keep the meat in butchers meat locker until we leave (have done this a time or to in Colorado)... any suggestions? I've never used the Yeti with storage of dry ice... anybody have a general idea how well it holds up in 70 degree weather? Thanks for any helpful info

Barnesc6, welcome to the forum. Bighorn Meat Cutting in Buffalo can hold your meat, but they can get pretty busy late in the season so you may run into a problem there. Proper and quick cooling in the field will be your best friend.

+1 on Bighorn Meat Cutting. I used them in 2015 for antelope when I hunted the unit South of 16 and they did a good job. We had 2 coolers in our truck. One full of ice and one empty. When we shot an antelope we would get the quarters and tenderloins back to the truck ASAP. Form there we would do a ice and meat alternating layer system to cool the meat until we got it to the butcher.

Just pack your cooler with one gallon jugs of frozen ice, and through the de-boned meat in it. There is 4 actual access points that get you onto the large piece of public. You will need to do some serious hiking, but if your willing to get in a couple miles you will fill your tags. Was there last fall on some leftover tags, and you had to start hunting at the 1 mile mark, it was flooded with orange up to about that. We didn't really even see much for tracks, then at the mile mark the sign really picked up.

Thanks go_deep... exactly what I was hoping to hear. Of those access points am I parking on paved road and hiking in or driving on dirt roads, then parking and hiking out. Only reason I ask is I've hear the roads can get pretty boggy with some rain so want to be prepared. Any chance you'd be willing to share where the 4 access points are?

Asking particulars on an open forum is akin to screwing somebodies dog. Try pm if you want info. Way too many computer scouters , that would also read the info.

But I will say the blm that you are asking about has motorized vehicle restrictions. So it is boot leather express.

Last, no antelope in Wyoming.

Good luck

Go to the county GIS page and the map of county roads is right there for everybody and their dog to see. The roads you can drive on will not be a problem.
